Society Journal 1996 John Murphy - shows that at the time the British were in possession of Wilmington, he was in command of a company of militia under Col. Young, was captured, and for ten months suffered the most inhuman treatment. He never received any compensation nor pay for his services. In House and Senate 18 Dec 1793, referred to Commissee. Committee found Murphey was taken prisoner as a captain, confined 9 1/2 months, received no pay, lost his property, recommend that he be authorized to draw from the Treasury 1/3 of his pay as Captain while in captivity and that a certificate for the other 2/3 be issued. In House 14 Dec 1789. Rejected. William Murphy and Will Rigsby Murphy in Sept 1780 deposited money in the State Treasury for borrowing.
