He married Catherine in 1802, so they had been married 14 years when he died.) This is reason it is so important to get all estate papers, which sometime show minor children not named in will). Anyway I don't believe he was the father of Benjamin Murphey, but do think that he could have had other sons - Peter, James, John, Stephen. (no, these prob. sons of Richard) A case in point is this will of Rev. William Murphy 1, dated I April, 1793, recorded Nov. term 1799. He names only wife: Sarah, sons Dubart, Richard, Isaac and Jesse, mentions four sons in minority, but in Green Co. TN deeds, from Beverly White we find two deeds, no money involved, to Isaac Barton. Isaac Barton is recorded as having married Keziah Murphy, dau. of Wm. I; Wm. conveyed land to Richard Murphy, Richard to David Murphy. Joseph Murphey Sr. to Catharine Thompson I I Nov 1802, bndsman Joseph Murphey Jr. The Journal of the American Irish Historical Society, Vol. X, by Patrick F. McGowan p. 143: "Among the noted ministers in that section was James Murphy, pastor of a church on Deep Creek in Surry County. He has been in many respects the most distinguished minister among the churches in this body. He and William Murphy, whose name frequently occurs in the history of the Virginia Baptists, were brothers. They began to preach when very young and were called by way of desirision, "Murphy's Boys." William, who had the most conspicuous talents, removed to Tennessee in 1780 and was one of the most active ministers in the Holston Association. The "Anglo-Saxons" now claim them as their own." (note: This was the area in which Joseph Murphy, brother of Rev. William Murphy, was located -- was there a third brother preaching or was there confusion in this published source????)
