Died: Departed this life 12th Nov. 1857, on Moore's Creek, New Hanover County, Mr. Cornelius Murphy, aged 87 years. The deceased was a native of the Island Arran, Scotland, and emigrated to this country in the year 1774. His parents with other emigrants to this country from the "Father Land" selected for their future residence that part of New Hanover County washed by the waters of Moore's Creek and Black River, then a wild uncultivated section of country, and but recently settled by a hardy population from the Old Country -- since noted for the thrift and generous hospitality of its citizens. To better their condition pecuniarily as well as to enjoy freedom of conscience in religion, were the chief and will re rmain lasting momentos of his worth and goodness. The funeral of this aged servant was in keeping with his life. Every preparation had been made for his exit months before his decease. ("His lamp was trimmed and " here this obituary stops. But Aunt Laura says the remaining lost lines were just a few more tributes to his character. Written by Colin Shaw. (these pages out of sequence and not complete) inducements to that urged these hardy pioneers to select North Carolina as their place of abode. Here their anticipations were fully realized in their future prosperity and religious enjouyments. Mr. Murphy was blessed with a pious parentage whose walk and conversation served to impress the truths of the gospel upon his susceptible mind. His memory was well stored with select portions of the best authors at command, these with "Fisher's Catechism" and the Holy Bible were blessed of God in bringing him to the foot of the Cross. In the year 1800 he connected himself with the Church of Black River and in 1813, during the pastorate of Rev. Robert Tate, he was inducted into the office of Ruling Elder, which office he filled with credit to himself and profit to the Church of God, until the infirmities of old age induced him to desist from the active duties of the office. Mr. Murphy's character as a citizen and Christian deserves some notice. He made no pretentions to brilliancy, nor sought he publicity before his fellow men. He rather courted privacy in the bosom of his family, yet he was not deficient of those sterner grealities of head or heart that place men in commanding positions -- for he had integrity, foresight, courage, and an indomitable perserverance in a high degree, and when called out by his fellow citizens, or by his brethren of the Church, to fill posts of danger or trust, he seldom refused, and always rendered most valuable services to the church and State. But our purpose is not to eulogise the dead or to attempt a portraiture of character, which to the public might seem an effort at embellishment. Let this suffice. His native worth, his stern integrity, his patriotism, his devotion to popular education, his warm charity, his generous hospitalities, his deep arden piety, are embalmed in the memories of his family and more intimate friends. These are the works which follow him. Died: On Moore's Creek, New Hanover County, the 12th of Dec. 1866, Mrs. Margaret Murphy, consort of the late Mr. Cornelius Murphy, aged 74 years 8 mos. and 2 days. In the death of this "mother in Israel" not only her children and immediate friends, but the community at large, have lost a friend.
