Caswell NC (formed 1777 from Orange County) Caswell County NC "Where the Present Meets the Past" Some white settlers had come to this area of North Carolina as early as 1740, but it was not until the early 1750's that the population began to grow rapidly. Only twenty residents paid taxes in 1748, increasing to 1,113 by 1752. By 1767 Orange County had the largest population of any county in North Carolina. In the Hawfields Settlement, located along the Haw River in the center of what would become Orange County, were the Blackwood, Craig, Freeland, Kirkland, Johnston and Strayhorn families. It is believed that four of these families (the Blackwoods, Craigs, Freelands and Kirklands) may have lived near one another in County Londonderry in Northern Ireland before moving to the colonies in the same vessel. They arrived in America around 1741 and settled in Paxtang Township along the Susquehannah River in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Between 1743 and 1745 these four families, along with the Johnston family and Gilbert Strayhorn, traveled the Great Wagon Road and settled near the Haw River. Early travelers through Caswell County encountered a wilderness that was practically inpenetrable. In 1773, J.F.D. Smyth described trees that stood so close together, with their vine laden branches so intertwined, he could hardly see. Surveyor William Byrd noted buffalo, wolves, panther, and a vast tract of cane "many stalks 13 to 16 feet high." and "as thick as a man's wrist." Caswell County eventually became home to some of North Carolina's most influential leaders. The county is named for Richard Caswell who served as North Carolina's first governor during the Revolutionary War. The technique of producing "bright leaf" tobacco was discovered in the County, near the town of Blanch. Known as "flue cured" today, it is the main kind produced in the U.S. The process made Caswell's tobacco valuable from 1840 to 1865, and the local economy prospered. Many beautiful homes, public buildings, churches and schools were built, and investments were made in businesses and mills. Thomas Day, a free black furniture maker from Milton, is known for his intricate woodwork during this period. Archibald Debow Murphey was an attorney, legislator and judge who developed statewide plans for education, health, and transportation, including a system of river canals to span the state. Although he died before many of the ideas were implemented, his vision "laid the groundwork on which the future greatness of North Carolina" was built. The coming of the Civil War devastated the county. With poor railroad connections to the rest of the state, the Plank Road rotting, and the soil exhausted, many people left in search of better futures. Gradually, however, progress was made, industries were recruited, government service improved, schools and roads rebuilt, and life became better. Caswell today is still heavily wooded and home to a wildlife preserve. This along with it's many farms and beautiful old buildings have helped to preserve it's rural charm and sense of timelessness.
