He probably moved to Bute (Franklin) Co NC abt 1770 when his name ceases to appear on Virginia records & appears on NC records. He was a Private in the Militia in Lunenburg Co 1758. Received land grant of 770 acres in St James Parish 1760. Constable in Lunenburg Co 1764; List of Tithes 1764 with "his sons" Herbert & Richard. Deed to John Hight of Bute Co NC for 160 acres on "Linches Creek" 1770, witnessed by Richard Hight. Deed of land in Granville Co to John Hight Sr of Franklin Co 1784. 1790 Census of Franklin Co, Halifax Dist. List John Sr, John, Robert, Hargert & William. The part of Franklin Co where John Hight lived was known as "Hight's District".
Will:Of John Hight (North Carolina State Archives); In The Name of God Amen-I John Hight being Weak In Body but of A Sound Mind do constitute & Appoint This my Last will & Testament: In manner & form following-To Witt I give & bequeath To my son William Hight all my land & plantation whereon I now live Containing by Estamation one Hundred & sixty acres To him & his heirs forever-Item I give & bequeath to my Son Charnel Hight one Cow & heffer One Sow & Six Shoats & all my wering appreall To him & his heirs for Ever. Item-I give & bequeath to my Daughter Lively Bobbitt one Feather bed & Furniture, one Cow, one iron pott to her & her heirs forEver-Item-I given & bequeath to my Daughter Elizabeth Pease one Looking Glass to her & her heirs for Ever-Item My Will & Desire Is that All my Estate not allready given Away be sold & After my just debts is paid be Equally Divided between my Twelve Children & my son Robert Hight being dead my Desire is his children Shall have his part-Item I do hereby consitute & Appoint my Son Herbert Hight And Nath. Jarrett my whole & sole Exeutor of this my last will & Testament utterly revoking & anulling all Other wills heretofore made do Constitute & appoint this my last will & Testament. The failure of John Hight Sr to name all twelve children in his will has posed a problem Due to various deed & records, 5 of the 6 missing names have been identified, tentatively, but probably correctly. The exact order of their births is not known but has been estimated. It is assumed the the children born after 1750 were from the second marriage.
