He is only one on Pittsylvania Co. Tax rolls in early 1780s. Later is John Mack, John Murphy.

Chalkey's Chronicles of the Scotch Irish in America, Vol. 2, p. 160.--Carrier vs. Caldwell- O.S. 197; N.S. TO- Deed dated 10th March, 1812 by Richard Carryer and Catherine, his wife, of Rockingham, to David Caldwell. Coveys 107 acres, part of 180 acres patented to Michael Hanagan, 15th May, 1784, and by him devised to his daughter, Margaret Murphy, and granddaughter, Anne Rife, and by them with their husbands, Abraham Riff and James Murphy; conveyed to Richard Carryer, 21st August, 1810, in a place called the Forest. Recorded in Rockingham, September, 1812.

p. 62 21 Jul 1747: William Hines of Albemarle Parish to his son, Peter Hines of the same, for Love and Affection . . . 400 acres in Albemarle Parish on both sides of Atchamoosock Swamp and bounded by Ludwells Branch, the Indian line, George Briggs, SIMON MURFEY, James Chappel and William Edmunds. Wts: Gilbert (his mark) Hay and Thomas (his mark) Sowersby. Recorded 21 Jul 1747.

Last Will and Testament of SIMON MURFEY

IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, this fifth day of July in the year of our Lord God one thousand seven hundred and fifty three, I, Simon Murfey of Surry County (Virginia), planter, being very sick and weak of body, but of perfect mind and memory, thank be given unto God. Therefore calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing it is apportented for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say, principally and first of all, I give and recommend my Soul into the hands of God that gave it and as for by body I commend it to the Earth to be buried in a Christianlike and decent manner at the discretion of my Ex'tors nothing ------- but at the eternal Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God and as touching such worldly Estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life.

I give, bequeath, devise and dispose of the same in the manner and form following.

Imprimis - I leave the use of my plantation I now dwell on to my wife Elizabeth Murfey with two negro men and all the remainder part of my estate during her widowhood.

Item - I leave the use of the plantation to my son Richard Murfey in Southampton County whereon he now dwells during his life. Afterwards I give and bequeath it to my grandson, Simon Murfey, to him and his heirs forever. And I likewise give one negro man called James, to my son Richard Murphy to him and his heirs forever.

Item - I leave the use of the plantation to my son Arthur Murfey where he now dwells in Surry County during his life. Afterwards I give and bequeaeth it to his son, James Murfey, to him and his heirs forever.

Item - I give and bequeath unto my son Simon Murphy the plantation where I now dwell upon the Akomosock Swamp after my wife's widowhood to him and his heirs forever, and I likewise give and bequeath one negro man named Sam to him and his heirs forever.

Item - I give and bequeath to my daughter Catherine Murfey one feather bed and furniture and two large pewter dishes.

Item - I give and bequeath unto my daughter Lucy Murfey one feather bed and furniture and two large dishes.

Item - I give to my daughter Elizabeth Hines one bell skillet.

Item - I give to my daughter Mary Magarrity five shillings.

All my whole estate but what is before mentioned I give and bequeath to my sons and daughters hereafter mentioned: Richard, Simon, Mary and Lucy, to be equally divided, and I constitute and appoint my loving wife, Elizabeth Murfey and Simon Murfey, Executor and Executrix of this my last will and testament and I do utterly disallow, revoke and disannul all and every other former testament wills, legacies and bequests and executors by me in any way before named, willed and bequeathed, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament.

In witness where I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written.

At a Court held for Surry County the 15th day of January 1754, the aforewritten last will and testament of Simon Murfey, deceased, was presented in Court by Elizabeth Murfey and Simon Murfey, the Extors therein named, and the same was proved by the oaths of Samuel Poole and Catherine Murfey, two of the witnesses thereto and by the Court ordered to be recorded and on the motion of the said Extors certificate is granted them for obtaining a probate thereof in due form and ---- Elizabeth Murfey a legatee therein named, unapproved/by the name of Elizabeth Edwards/and freely relinquished and released her right to all legecy or legacies given herein the said will.
