He signed the revolutionary pledge in 1775. His service record shows he served under Capt. Thomas Moffatt, Sept 1775 (1 month); Capt Francis Burns, Dec 1775, 1 month march to Fort Constitution, opposite West Point; Capt Thomas Moffat, Mar 1776. History of Orange County states he enlisted in Thomas McKinstry's Company of Col William Malcolm's regiment in the Continental line. He was at valley Forge, fought at Monmouth, and stony Point and participated in several successful movements led by Col Burr and major Albert Pawling against detachments of British in the Jerseys. James stated that he had served for his brother, David, in the Rev. War. James applied for his pension at age 77 on Dec 5, 1832. He served with a John Mapes
