Thomas Smith GARRISON was my husbands Grandfather.  He had three wives. The first one UNK died young.  Then he married a widow, RachelFREDERICK, who also died soon after, but they had a baby Jennie, b about 1876. As his third wife he married Mary Ida BAILEY, d/o William H Bailey and MaryAnn Ryerson , on April 2, 1889 in Monroe Presbytarian church.  They had 5 or 6 children, most of whom died. A son b.1896 he named Russell Frederick  and a dau Ida Mae, my husbands mother in April 1905.  The
mother died 4 weeks later.  Thomas was really unlucky with his women, but he must have been very much in love with Rachel to name a son by another women after her family.

Arlene notes that there is some confusion among sources about the birthdates of children from Ebenezer to Josiah. Jonathan's birhdate (perhaps) should have been listed as 1721-22 to allow for the change in the calendar. This makes more sense as otherwise Jonathan was born 6 months after his sister.

Who was Eleanor Fulton? Many of her descendants claim relationship to Robert Fulton of steamboat fame.  Is there proof?

3.  Jonathan Jr., born 1757, died November 16, 1838; married Mary.  Their children:  Rubin, born about 1791; David, born March 31, 1793, died about 1880; Jonathan 3rd, born 1795; John, born July 24, 1797, died April 22, 1868; Samuel, born about 1799; Daniel, born 1801, died 1869; Abraham, born 1804; Anne, born 1806.

Deaths recorded in the Bible of Jonathan Stevens Jr.: Jonathan Stevens, Nov.. 16th; Mary Stevens, May 19th; Jonathan Stevens, Ju.; Samuel Stevens, Abraham Stevens. (Since Jonathan Jr. made his will July 14, 1838, and it was probated March 11, 1839, the Nov. 16th must refer to 1838.  His wife Mary must have died earlier because she was not mentioned in his will.  The three boys probably died in childhood.)

In his will, Jonathan Stevens, Jr. left two-thirds of all his personal property to his son John, the other third to his daughter Anne. John was to pay off all debts against his father or the estate and was to receive all monies owing to the father, and he was to pay his brother Daniel $180 and interest within four years of the father's death. Anne was to pay her brother Daniel $100 and interest in the same period.  There was no mention of real estate.  James Gray and James Cromull (Cromwell) of the Town of Monroe were designated executors.  John McGarrah of Monroe was the only witness.

About 1805 Jonathan Stevens built a house to replace the cabin he had occupied.  It was about half a mile east of the house of Jonathan Sr.  Between the house and the road which passed nearby Jonathan Jr. built a high stone retaining wall shaped like the letter S, with stone steps at the exact center.  Both house and wall still serve their purpose in the ownership of Norbert Wanner family, who purchased the property soon after the death of Seely Stevens, grandson of Jonathan Jr.

The original of the following will and a nicely transcribed copy of same were sent from Mrs. Earle B. Predmore, Sr., R. F.D. Chester, N. Y. to Mrs. Bessie Masker, 124 North Main Street, Monroe, New York. The envelope was apparently hand delivered as there are no postage marks on it, so I have no idea when Grammy got this.  It was found among several papers at Mom's house.

As for the info from Ruttenber's 1859 History of the Town of Newburgh, Orange County N.Y. here's the info that followed that he was able to obtain from then available records:
"This general and frequent change in proprietors raises a serious obstacle in the way of tracing satisfactorily, in all cases, the transfer of the lands to actual settlers; and to this may be added that in many instances the deeds are not recorded in the Clerk's office. The investigations that we have made, however, show that the first settlements outside of the German Patent were along King's highway between the Village of Newburgh and Marlborough. In the vicinity of Middlehope, Melchior Gillis settled, as previously noticed, as early probably as 1709. In the same vicinity 1200 acres, being portions of the shares of James Graham and Alexander Griggs* ( these shares were subsquently known as "Griggs Patent" and "Bonds Patent") in the Harrison Patent, passed to Jurie Quick as early as 1719. Quick sold to Zacharias Hofman, and after his death this tract, and the lots held by him in the German Patent, were sold to settlers, among others to Joseph Bloomer, in 1754, and Michael Demott and the Dentons and Flewwellings in 1764. Another parcel of the Harrison Patent was sold as early as 1716 to James Ellsworth; which was for a time occupied by his widow, and then sold by William Ellsworth to Samuel Stratton in 1753, and by Stratton to Jehiel Clark. Another parcel was sold by James Alexander to Arthur Smith in 1751. Samuel Gomez sold to Samuel and John Fowler, november 6, 1747, one half of the fifth division of the Patent, consisting of 500 acres. The extreme northern portion of the Patent was held at an early date by Jacobus Van Blarcken, whose interest was purchased by Wolvert Acker at Sheirff's sale in 1772. The interest of William Bond in the Patent descended to Susanna Bond, who sold 600 acres to William Wynant; 100 acres to James Hunter; 200 acres Jurian Mackey, and 100 acres to James Hunter; 100 acres to Jane Wynant, wife of Jurie Wynant. Thes sales were all made prior to 1762. the Gillis Patent or a portion of it, passed to John Fowler, and from him to Daniel Kniffen, in 1758, and afterwards to Underhill Merritt."

Information on George and Elizabeth(Wiggins) Westlake and their children is from three sources all found in the OCGS Library at Goshen.
1) Helen roe Predmores Stevens files. She notes as her source "Notes of Col. ???(can't read)
2) A Pedigree chart from Herbert Thomas Abrams Jr, filed in 1977
3) Archive record filed by Gen. Soc of Utah.
None of the sources are complete, but there is enough similar information to suggest they are for the same family. Some dates vary slightly. A major difference is that (3) child of George and Elizabeth Wiggins Westlake as George b Abt 1751 m. 21 May 1776 to Mary Smith (1) shows child George b 11 Aug 1865. Predmore also states that George Westlake "was a son of Richard Westlake who was a son of Richard Westlake who was a son of Thomas Westlake" (no reference).

George Westlake, married Elizebeth Wiggins and had abt.6 children. The second born, a son, Jacob. George is the brother to my ancestor Samuel Westlake b.1727. He married Sarah Welling. Their father is one of two brothers Samuel or George Westlake b. abt 1699. I have Found info. listing Samuel b.1699 naming the same children as I have listed for George. so go figure. The wife's of these men are as follows: Samuel married Anne Burroughs, and George Married Catherine Terwilzer. These two Westlakes are the sons of Albert Westlake b. 1675 in England. His father was Samuel Westlake b. 1650 Devon England. I hope this is helpful and fun!
