Children of HENRY MAPES and RUTH RUMSEY are:
v.SARAH MAPES, b. 1774, ,Orange,NY; d. Aft. 1830, ,Orange,NY; m. WILLIAM
BREWSTER, Bef. 1796, ,Orange,NY.
Notes for SARAH MAPES:
SOURCE-Birth
SARAH (MAPES) BREWSTER was born in 1774 (from a book written by Frank Mapes
Ham, entitled "Mapes Family in America", published in 1962 by the Mapes
Association). There is a copy of this book on file at the Orange County
Genealogical Society.
Notes for WILLIAM BREWSTER:
SOURCE-Census
1800 Federal Census, Cheesecocks, Orange County, NY, Roll 21, p. 387:
WILLIAM BREWSTER's household contains 1M & 1F <10 b. 1790-1800 [SAMUEL &
JULIA]; 1M & 1F 16<26 b.1774-1784 [WILLIAM and SARAH]. Their immediate
neighbors are JEREMIAH ROBERTS and JACOB LEWIS. JESSE MARVIN is the 5th
household away from theirs.
SOURCE-Census
1810 Federal Census, Monroe, Orange County, NY, Roll 29, p. 375:
WILLIAM BREWSTER's household contains 1M & 1F <10 b. 1800-10 [Error? Is this
really CORNELIA & CAROLINE b.1810?]; 1M & 1F 26<45 b. 1765-1784 [WILLIAM and
SARAH]; and 1F 10<16 b.1794-1800 [JULIA]. It would appear that SAMUEL, age
about 14, is living elsewhere. Their immediate neighbors were NATHAN MAPES
and ZEPHANIAH HOWELL. GILBERT TURNER is the fifteenth household away from
theirs.
SOURCE-Census
1820 Federal Census, Monroe, Orange County, NY, Roll #64, page 289:
WILLIAM BRUSTER's household contains 1M <10 b. 1810-20 [JOHN V.C.]; 1M & 1F
26<45 b.1775-1794 [WILLIAM and SARAH]; 2F 10<16 b. 1804-1810 [CORNELIA &
CAROLINE, twins].

The records of the First Presbyterian Church of Monroe reveal nothing about
the MAPES family, except that DAVID MAPES owned seat 3 in one of the pews.
However, there are two BREWSTER marriages recorded there:
BREWSTER, CORNELIUS to SAREPTA BEETLEY Nov 13, 1849, by Rev. D. N. Freeland;
and BREWSTER, JULIA to ABIJAH FLORENCE Dec 3, 1821, by Rev. Hosea Ball. JULIA
may well be the daughter who was born between 1794-1800 to WILLIAM BREWSTER
and SARAH MAPES.
There is no record of burials for WILLIAM and/or SARAH [MAPES] BREWSTER in or
around Monroe. It appears that WILLIAM died after the 1820 Census as he is
not listed in the 1830 Census. WILLIAM and SARAH's two sons are enumerated in
households of their own by 1840: SAMUEL and CORTLAND (JOHN V.C. BREWSTER).
See their records.
