"Jacob was born Dec 19, 1862 in Indiana and moved to Stearns County with his family in 1867.  Jacob married Mary Perkinson of Sauk Centre and lived in Stearns county until 1902.  At that time they moved three miles northeast of Westport and lived on the same place until opening a hardware store in
Westport, with son Jacob W., in 1924.  the store operated until 1940. Jake ran a steam threshing rig for many years.  Jacob and Mary had five children - one died shortly after birth:  Mildred (Beste), Elvira McGowan), Lawrence, deceased Jacob (Jack); Lee, Deceased; Carl, deceases.  Jacob passed  away in
1941 at the age of 79 years.  Mary passed away 1956 at the age of 89 years.
A lot of Westport kids remember Gram Frederick's organ and how much fun it was to play it."

" Jacob R Frederick was born on a farm near Shakopee, Minn, Dec 19, 1863. At the age of two years his parents moved to a farm 3 miles east of Westport where he lived until July 26, 1892 when he was united in marriage to Mary Isabelle Perkinson. They moved unto his farm, two and one-half miles southeast of Westport where they resided 10 years. He then purchased the farm northeast of Westport and resided there until he purchased the hardware implement and coal business.
He was a very prosperous farmer and served the public in many capacities. He served several terms as clerk of the school board and also several terms on Westport township board, was a Director of Northfolk Farmers Mutual Insurance Co until his death.
His health has been failing for the past two years and since June has spent most of his time in Minneapolis until Oct. 12 when he returned home and remained until Sunday when he returned to Minneapolis where he passed away at 1:30 PM Tuesday morning, Jan 7.
he is survived by his wife and six children: Mildred Beste, of Osakis; Elvira Kittoe of Mitchell, SD; Lee of Sauk Centre; Lawrence, Jacob, William and Carl, all of Westport and 18 grandchildren;; three brothers, Ed of Maple Creek, Sask Canada; Monroe and Charlie of Westport, and one sister, Kate Doty of tintah, Minn.
He was preceded in death by one infant daughter.
Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church in Westport, Friday at 2 PM Rev. Clark of Glenwood officiated. Paul bearers were Leslie and Rupert Judkins, William Simpson, Wm Welch, and FA Gaffaney. The remains were laid to rest in Lake Amelia cemetery at Villard.
He will be greatly missed by his many friends and will always be remembered by the good deeds he has done.

" Jacob R Frederick, an old resident of Westport passed away at University hospital, Minneapolis, on Tuesday Morning, Jan 7, at 1:30 am. Mr Frederick was born at Shakopee Minn Dec 19, 1863 where he lived until two years of age, when he moved to Westport. He was married to Mary Isabelle Perkinson on July 26, 1892. They lived on a farm near Westport until 1924 when they moved into town. Mr Frederick had been in failing health the past two years and had spent most of the summer in hospital. He is survived by Mrs Frederick, four sons and two daughters, besides 18 grandchildren. All the children and grandchildren attended the funeral which was held at the ME Church on Friday Jan 10. Married 3/30/1895 to Katie E. Frederick, daughter of Jacob and Mary Jane Smith Frederick of Ashley, Stearns Co. MN., who was teaching school near Glenwood, MN at the time. They settled on a tree claim near Campbell, MN shortly after that, coming there behind oxen that were red from the mosquitoes biting them.  After establishing the tree claim, they moved to the former Doty farm 3 miles west of Nashua, MN.  He farmed and ran a pump station for the SOO line RR on the Rabbit river near the farm for many years, and retired to Santa Ana, CA, where they both died in 1956. They are buried in Sauk Centre, MN.

Nashua: Barto E Doty was born Nov 30, 1865 at Sparta Wisconsin and died June 26 at Santa Ana, Calif. just three months after the death of his wife.
As a boy he lived in St Cloud and on a farm near Sauk Centre. He was one of the pioneer settlers of this area, coming to Campbell in 1893 with a team of oxen and homesteading on the farm recently owned by Herman Miller. After two years he was married to Katie Fredeick of Westport on March 20, 1895. About 1900 they moved to the present Floyd Doty farm near Nashua. In 199929 they moved to Tintah and their last five years were spent with their daughter Mrs. Jack Robinson in Santa Ana.
For many years he was employed by the Soo Line operating the pump for Smith's tank.
He joined the Masonic Lodge of Campbell in 1914 and still cherished his membership at the time of his death.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 29 at the Tintah Congregational Church at 1 PM with the Rev. J.H. Blackhurst officiating. Mrs Vernon Beving sang "Ivory palaces" and "Take my Hand O Precious Lord" accompanied by Mrs Chas. Putnam, organist.  Pallbearers were: W.B. Woodward, Chas Putnam, Maurice Neisses, Robery ray, Walter Putnam, and Everett Kapitan.
Masonic Burial rites were conducted by Agate Lodge No 167 of Campbell at Greenwood cemetery at Sauk Centre beside this wife who passed away in March. Members of the Masonic lodge attended,"

LIFE AND DEATH OF MRS .E. DOTY.
Katie Frederick was born near Westport Minn. March 20, 1869 and died march 24, 1956 at the age of 87 years, 4 days. She was the last survivor of a family of 6 boys and 4 girls. Her girlhood was spent at Westport- Sauk Centre area where she taught school for several years. On her 26th birthday she was married to Barto E Doty of Sauk Centre. They settled on a homestead farm near Campbell and moved to the farm west of Nashua about 1900, living there until 1929, when they moved to Tintah.  About 5 years ago the Doty's went to make their home with their daughter Mrs J.B. Robinson in Santa Ana, California. Mrs Doty helped organize and conduct W.C.T.U. and Sunday School meetings in the old Elliott schoolhouse many years ago, served as clerk of the school board for several years. She was a member of the Eastern Star at Campbell, the Congregational church, and Ladies Aid at tintah. She took an active interest in Community affairs until she suffered a stroke in her 80th year.
She is survived by her husband and their four children: Mrs Edna Woodward and Mrs Ethel Robinson of Santa Ana, Calif, Floyd Doty of Nashua, and Mrs Hazel Steen block of Campbell; nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Rev Russell Robinson of Pomona Calif. conducted services in Santa Ana, and accompanied his grandmother's body to Sauk Centre where he also conducted the services on Thursday April 5. Interment will be in the family plot in Greenwood Cemetery there.

Hoffman of Sauk Centre last Friday Morning, Nov 27, after a long illness with a disease which no medical skill could baffle although many doctors tried. Death came peacefully and like a little child that seeks repose, she sank to her eternal rest. She was born at Ashley, Sep the 12, 1871 and resided with her parents at that place until he marriage to Mr Wm. Bush, on March 20, 1895 and their short married life was one of domestic peace and happiness. Three sisters, Mrs. R.J. Luke of Bixby, ND; Mrs B.W. Doty of Tintah, and Mrs C.O. Hoffman of Sauk Centre, her father, Mr. J.S. Frederick of Westport; Mr Sam Frederick of Missoula; Mr Edward Frederick of Maple Creek, Canada; Mr Munroe Frederick of Carpis ND; and Mr. Charles, Jake and Bert Frederick of Westport, together with her husband and children are left to mourn her loss, Rev. Handtside conducted the ceremony and interment was in Lake Amelia cemetery. She had a host of friends who deeply regret her taking away and extend their sincerest sympathy to the bereaved family."

My parents are from Pope County, (moved away in the 1940s) and recognize a lot of names when I tell them of my research. They are very interested. As a matter of fact, in the file you sent to me you mentioned a hotel in Westport . My mother can remember as a little girl living in that hotel. Her family (the Welch family ) lived in the bottom floor and it was not being used as a hotel at the time. It was where she saw the ghost, she says.

Page 5: She ( Helen Predmore) speculates that Child #7, Mun, is probably named Osmun. No, his name was Monroe.  From my childhood days I can remember a "Mun" Frederick. I think his wife was Mae and I think they ran a hotel that had a lunch counter in Westport. Westport wasn't large enough for much of anything but I think it was a hotel. At any rate they lived there. I can remember the big building and the counter. Why I was in there I do not know. I was pretty small; maybe my aunt was showing me off. I did not know his name was Monroe until later years. I suppose Mun is a corruption of the shortened Mon.

She( Helen Predmore) says Bert is Albert or Herbert. No it was just plain Bert.  When I see them I can remember hearing a lot of the names of Fredericks that I come across in clippings, etc.  There were Fredericks all over the place and my mother talked a lot about them. She knew they were some kind of relation to her, but never knew what. There was a ³Jake Frederick¹s place² just to the west of the Cooper farm, very close in fact. When I was a small child the house was lived in, but it later years it was abandoned and just like the Cooper place no longer exists. I¹ve never checked it out, but it may well have been part of the Jacob & Catherine Stevens original homestead.

Pearl Smith died (UNKNOWN). She married Bert Frederick on 25 Nov 1909 in Campbell, Wilkins Co. MN.

James Gray was born in 1822 in Dublin Ireland. He emigrated to Canada and in the 1860's to MN. He obtained land in Ashley township. He donated land for the Episcopal Church and later deeded 360 acres to his son Charles.

Catherine Lewis [scrapbook] was born 1826 in Glasgow Scotland. She died 24 Jan 1880 in Ashley, Stearns, MN and was buried (UNKNOWN) in Gray Cemetery, sec 27, Ashley Twp, Stearns, MN. Catherine married James Gray on 20 Jan 1843 in Rawdon Quebec Canada.

There is a Lewis Lane in Ashley MN that is named for Catherine's family. A 1/4 mile length of willows was planted there by her brothers.

Harold O'Brian was born 2 Dec 1901. He died Apr 1972. Harold married Genevieve Gray.

My Grandpa Hoffman helped build a stockade at Sauk Centre, Minnesota as protection from the Indians. My Grandpa Hoffman's father was a civil War veteran. My Grandma Gray's mother died on the boat coming over from Ireland as was buried at sea.
My Dad's parents took a claim in Ashley Township, Minnesota, about three miles from the Parker ranch. They deeded 360 acres to my dad. We lived there until I was a junior in high school. My folks were married May 15, 1900 but dad was struck by lightening and passed away in 1910. Mom, us three kids, dad's sister Kate and cousin Mary lived there till 1920 when we moved to town (Sauk Centre)
Fenton and I were married in Spokane Washington on July 6 1922. We lived near Sutherlin Oregon until 1926. Then moved back to Sauk Centre until 1937. Then moved back to West Linn Oregon (near Oregon City), then West Portland, the Bellevue southwesat of McMinnville, then Scholls, then Tualatin then Portland and to Bellefontaine in 1947. My brother Charles helped Fenton get six jobs.
Richard and MArvin graduated from Sherwood High School in June 1942 and went to work on the Multnomah County Poor Farm at Troutdale milking cows and working with the dairy herd. They went from there to the shipyard in Portland and into the army in 1943. Dick and Fenton wrote each other about buying a farm. When we lived in Portland I worked next door at a flower shop. After the war Dick worked  next door in a garage and Fenton worked at the Eastside Tool and Die Company. Marian worked in the office for Bekins Moving and Storage and Joyce attendee Washington High School...
Dick started to College in Portland and transferred to OCS in 1947. He subscribed to the Corvallis Gazette Times and noticed the ad by Bloor for a 200 acre farm near Bellfontain. They bought the farm in April 1947, and added the 200 acre Dornbush farm in 1953 with Marians help. Dick moved to the Dornbush farm out of the log cabin. In 1953 MArvin and Dick built a house for Fenton and me. The Brown's 10 acres were purchased in 1963.
Our neighbour Warner Brown wrote a letter to every family near Bellfontain inviting them to church and we attended this church ever since...Fenton graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1914 and Dick from OSU in 1950- both in agriculture.
The rowley and PArker Tree Farm  Service was formed in September 1954 and continued to July 1973 when MArvin quit to take the OSU Forest Properties Manager Job for OSU. Dick continued working as a timber cutter and partner in Tree Farm Stewards Inc until 1978.
Fenton passed away in 1960 and Dick ran the farm alone until 1978 when his son Ed became a partner. Ed and family built their house on 5 acres on the farm in 1972. Susan and Mike on 20 acres in 1975. Daughter Bettey set chokers for them in 1977.

Lela May PArker,88, a londtime resident of Bellfintain, died of natural causes on Monday.
She was born in Sauk Centre Minnesota, the daughter of Charles and Anne Hoffman Gray. She was raised on a farm there, and after graduating highschool taught school for a year. (NB- copy of her teaching contract dated 16 July 1921 on file LH)
On July 5, 1922 she married C Fenton PArker in Spokane WA. They lived in Sutherlin from 1922-1926, then moved back to MN intil 1936, when they moved to Oregon City.
In 1947 they moved to Bellfontain, where she lived until moving to Hood River three months ago. Mr Parker preceded her in death in 1969(NB. wrong date - LH).
She was a member of the Bellfontain Community Church
Survivors include one son, richard Parker of Bellfontain; two daughters, Marian rowley of Philomath and Joyce Brynteson of Reedsport; 11 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
