FIRST GENERATION

1. August Wilhelm SCHUMANN was born in 1791 in Anhalt-Cothen, Prussia. He immigrated in 1846 to Texas. aboard the Dyle. He appeared on the census in 1850 in Guadalupe Co Texas. Lived in household 70-70.     He died on 30 May 1858 in Guadalupe County, Texas. Drowned in Guadalupe River.    He was buried in Schumannsville Cemetery, Guadalupe County, Texas. Note from Lisa Pevehouse <LANTAKI@aol.com>: The earliest occurance of this spelling of the surname was found in the ships passenger lists of the mid-18th century and is probably a corruption of the origianal "Schomann" by English ship clerks. Over many generations, the name has been shortened (or in some cases relenghtened) to the present Schuman (the shortest version seen to date was "Suman") with some variations of "Shoeman", "Schuemann" and "Showman". It is reportedly a derivavtive occupational appellation (such as a seller, pollisher, or repairer of footware, as opposed to "Shumaker", which would imply a manufacturer of footware) This seems to imply that the earliest of our ancestors were probably shoe merchants.

Anhalt-Cothen existed until 1847, when the prince, Henry, died in 1847, this family became extinct, and according to an arrangement between the Anhalt-Dessau and Anhalt-Bernburg lines, Cothen was added to Dessau. Anhalt-Dessau existed until Leopold IV, who reigned from 1817-1871, had the satisfaction in 1863 of reuniting the whole of Anhalt under his rule. Anhalt became a state of the German Empire in 1871.

He was married to Catherine KLEMM on 29 Apr 1849 in New Braunfels, Comal County, Texas. Catherine KLEMM was born in 1820 in Hessia. She immigrated in 1846. She appeared on the census in 1850 in Gaudalupe County, Texas. Listed with Augustus Schumann (Gustav) She immigrated in 1852. This date can't be right because she married Gustav in 1849 in New Braunfels. It was also put with Ida her granddaughter. This date may have been for Chas. Lehne who was right below her entry on the census. She appeared on the census in 1900 in Gillespie County, Texas. The census listed her as Catherine Kindentsch a widow. It gave her birth as Oct 1829 born in Germany a widow and she had 9 children and 2 were living. It said she immigrated in 1846. She appeared on the census in 1910 in Gillespie County, Texas. She was living with her daughter and son in law. She was listed as a widow. The census said she had 7 children and 4 were living.Which conflicts with the 1900 Census information. incorrect. I checked burial records and Laechelin was the spelling
