He was born on Nov. 22, 1922, in Ellinger, Texas, to John Hubenak and Agnes Zatopek Hubenak. He attended schools in Ellinger until joining the Civilian Conservation Corps at age 17. He later enlisted in the U.S. Army, proudly serving until his discharge in 1942. He then settled in Kerrville, where he met his wife and life-long companion, Janette Wood Hubenak. He and Jan married on June 22, 1946, and they continued to live their lives together in Kerrville until his death. Lad was one of the nicest and most honest and decent of men that truly lived by the “Golden Rule” and treated everyone with kindness, dignity and respect. His favorite thing was to spend time together with his wife, children, grandchildren and extended family, but he also truly enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, such as hunting and fishing with family and friends, dancing at parties, preparing his famous BBQ chicken for special events and using his green thumb to grow the best tomatoes and other vegetables in his massive garden. Lad never met a stranger and made friends easily and, as a result, he was loved dearly by not only his family, but by his many friends that he made throughout his life. His warmth, humor, generous heart and love of life, family and friends will forever be with us. Lad was predeceased by his parents, John and Agnes Hubenak; and by two infant daughters, Mary Jo and Deborah Ann.
