St. James' Church, Chapelthorpe

Built in the 13th century Chaplethorpe chapel was used for worship until the priest John Flechier retired in 1548, it was then used as a cottage. In 1624 King James I granted Letters of Patent for the chapel of St. James at Chappell Thorpe.

Rebuilt in 1771 to replace the Chaplethorpe chapel that was by then in a ruinous condition at a cost of 1,194 to demolish the old chapel and rebuild a new one.

In 1843 Queen Victoria approved the assigning of a district to the chapel and it being designated a church.
