Venango Township is located in the northern portion of Crawford County, west of French Creek. It was incorporated on July 9, 1800 and first settled in 1797. It contains 8,971 acres. It is an agricultural area with rolling hills, picturesque farms, and shallow streams. The original boundary included portions of Hayfield and Cussewago townships. From 1829 until 1852, what is now Cambridge Township was within its borders. The township's name is derived from the Seneca term for French Creek.
