French Creek
The creek flows along the eastern border of the village.
Highway
U.S. Routes 6 & 19 lead through the main streets (Church and Cussewago) of the village.
Railroad
The railroad began service to Venango in October 1862, with both passenger and freight
service at the Venango Depot, located on the east side of town across French Creek.
Today, trains still pass along the eastern town boundary, but no longer stop. Railroads
using the tracks were the Atlantic & Great Western. Erie, Erie-Lackawana, Conrail, and
most recently the Oil Creek & Titusville Railroad.
Trolley Service
The trolley station was located at the corner of Church Street and Cussewago Street.
The trolley route was from Meadville to Erie, with stations at Venango, Cambridge
Springs and Edinboro. The routes entered by Church Street to Cussewago Street, north
to Green Acres, crossing the road and going up the hill past Berry Knolls, where it
crossed the railroad tracks on the overhead bridge, down Route 19, then to Cambridge
Springs, where one changed cars for Erie.
In Venango there was a booster station, which had two large dynamos. Agents at the
depot and ticket office were: Con McClosky, George Kepler, Ralph Kepler, Cecil Taylor,
Roy Whipple, Arn Hollenbeck, Dan Terrill, and Wilson Donahue.
Venango Town Ordinances:
SEPTEMBER 6, 1912 "The Central District and Printing Telegraph Company---To
construct, maintain and operate it's posts, poles, cables, etc.
FEBRUARY 4, 1916 "Granting to the Venango Electric Company----the use of
streets, lanes and alleys in the Borough of Venango, Crawford County,
Pennsylvania, for supplying electric light, heat and power.
MAY 26, 1916 Permission granted for a one-track trolley system operation.
