The name Venango was formerly applied to French Creek, and is a corruption of the Indian term
Innun-guah, given to the creek by the Senecas and expressive of an indecent figure carved on the bark
of a tree near its banks.
The town's original name was Strawville, named after Philip Straw who settled the land in 1797. It
was renamed Klecknerville by John Kleckner, who had purchased and plotted the land in 1838. It was
incorporated as Venango in 1852 from Venango Township.
Venango is situated on the west bank of French Creek, between Saegertown and Cambridge Springs.
The borough boundaries extend just south of the Venango Inn to North Street; from Gospel Hill
Road, just west of Church Street on the West; the east bank of French Creek on the East; at the
railroad bridge on the north side of French Creek, where it crosses US 6-19.

and vicinity.
