Titusville is located in eastern Crawford County and was named for Jonathan Titus, who with his uncle,
Samuel Kerr, surveyed land for the Holland Land Company. He came upon the Oil Creek Valley in 1796
and cleared land for crops and pastures and started a settlement. They called it Edinburgh. The name was
changed to Titusville in 1847 when the village became a city. It was incorporated on February 28, 1866.
Oil Creek, which runs along the city, was named because of oil seeped from the ground and formed a film
upon the surface of the creek.
