VENANGO — Andrew (Andy) Thomas, 86, resident of 22637 Fry Road, Venango, died Wednesday,
Jan. 11, 2006, at Erie Veterans Administration Hospital. He had resided in Cussewago
Township, Crawford County, since 1950.
Born Nov. 22, 1919, in Charleroi, he was a son of the late Constance and Lena Bucis Thomas.
On April 2, 1945, he married Mary Ann Petkas and she died Jan. 9, 1992.
During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in the African and European
theaters. From 1950 to 1955, he owned and operated the Corner Tavern in Venango and
following that he was a carpenter doing bridge construction until his retirement in 1981.
Throughout those same years he was engaged in beef farming.
A member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Cambridge Springs, he also belonged to
Carpenters Union Local 2274 out of Pittsburgh, and to Venango Veterans of Foreign War
Post 169 and American Legion Post 381 in Cambridge Springs. He enjoyed fishing.
Family members surviving him include his former wife, Diane Fields of Saegertown; three
daughters, Andrea Closky and her husband, Ted, Linda Mailliard and her husband, David,
and Robin Smith and her husband, Reid, all of Venango; a sister, Jennie Molnar of
Cleveland; and six grandchildren, Kristine Gosnell, Edward Closky, Deanna Walker, David
Mailliard, John Smith and Bonnie Youngs. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his first wife, Mary Ann Thomas, was a sister,
Emily Walensa; and four brothers, Edward, Frank, James and Constance.
Friends may call at Van Matre Family Funeral Home, 335 Venango Ave., Cambridge Springs,
today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. p.m. Vigil prayer services will be conducted there this
evening at 8:30.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in
Cambridge Springs on Friday morning at 10, with Monsignor Lawrence Speice, pastor of
the church, serving as celebrant.
Committal with full military honors will be in Venango Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to St. Anthony Church, 165 Beach Ave., Cambridge Springs, Pa.
