Joseph Anthony (Uncle Joe) Speck

CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS — Joseph Anthony (Uncle Joe) Speck, 84, died unexpectedly at his
residence, 24696 Elm Road., Cambridge Springs, Thursday, March 16, 2006.
He was born in Cussewago Township, Crawford County, Dec. 19, 1921, and other than
his military service he lived there all of his life. He was a son of the late
Stanley L. Speck Sr. and Mary Hanick Speck. On Aug. 4, 1945, he married the former
Audrey Lewis and she survives.
A veteran of the World War II, he served with the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant in
the 4th Division, 12th Infantry, receiving the Bronze Star and other medals. He saw
action on Utah Beach on D-Day and participated in the Battle of the Bulge and the
Battle of St.-Lo. His division was the first to arrive in Paris. He belonged to
Venango Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 169, where he was a lifetime member, and to
American Legion Post 381 in Cambridge Springs. Following the war, he began employment
with Bucyrus Inc. in Erie as a welder, retiring in 1980 after 33 years. He also grew
potatoes and raised beef on the family farm in Cussewago Township. He was president
of Crossingville Sportsman's Club for 10 years and loved to play euchre with his
friends.
Family members surviving him include his wife, Audrey, of 60 years; a son, Joseph
Speck and his wife, Terry, of Boalsburg; and two daughters, Karen Hager and her
husband, David, of Meadville, and Christi Atkinson and her friend, Brian, of Guys
Mills. In addition, there are seven grandchildren surviving, Tawnia Price, Eric
Hager, Jennifer Rogan, Jill Siegworth, Holly Atkinson, Mikey Bennett and Tori
Bennett; and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Helen Sertic of
Nevada; two brothers, Charles Speck of Pontiac, Mich., and Andy Speck and his wife,
Georgia, of Franklin; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, are three sisters, Sally
Christianson, Eleanor Dederick and Margaret Durasa-Dunn; and three brothers, Stanley
Speck, Walter Speck and Benny Speck.
Friends may call at Van Matre Family Funeral Home, 335 Venango Ave., Cambridge
Springs, Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Vigil prayer services will be conducted
there Sunday afternoon at 3:30. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at
St. Phillip’s Catholic Church, Crossingville, Monday morning at 10, with the Rev.
Thad Kondzielski, pastor of the church, as celebrant.
Interment, with full military honors, will be in St. James Cemetery, Crossingville.
