N ewtontown is located in northeast Troy Township. It was settled in 1813 by William Sheffield, 
a retired sea captain who came from New Haven, Connecticut. Sheffield built a saw mill in town, 
which was known as Newton Mill. Sheffield later moved to Titusville, where he established the 
first store in Titusville. Newtontown was once known as the center of the lumbering business.
