Meadville is the county seat of Crawford County. It was founded in 1788 and named in honor of General David Mead, who with his brothers, John and Joseph, arrived in 1787 from Northumberland County to start a new settlement. The city was incorporated on February 15, 1866. It was incorporated as a borough on March 23, 1823.
