We find Absalom FOX listed as the son of George and Mary FOX of the
New Jersey FOX family born Abt. 1734 . We
believe he was born in the area of Kingwood,
Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He
married Christian BONHAM, daughter of Amariah
BONHAM, at Kingwood, New
Jersey. They lived in New Jersey, and Loudon
County Virginia (500 acres on the Broad Run of the Potomac,
Feb 8 1765) before removing to Washington County in western Pennsylvania.
This was originally the part of Fayette County which became Washington
County, in 1781. In 1780, Absalom FOX was granted 276 acres on Buffalo
Lick Run in West Virginia. In 1781, Absalom is recorded in the Tax
records with 95 acres, two horses, seven cattle and no
sheep. In 1782 Absalom and wife Christian, of
Washington county PA, leased 276 acres of land
in Hampshire county VA, on Branch Mountain, to Robert Calvin.. When
the Reverend Sutton brothers were called into the Western Pennsylvania
wilderness in the 1780's, it appears our Absalom and
Christian BONHAM FOX and their children
followed; moving to the upper Ten Mile area near Lone Pine,
in present day Washington County. Land record has them located at
"FOX HILL" on Bushy Run of Ten Mile
Creek. With 324 ¾ acres,
granted January 26 1785 land warrant.
It is stated that the two youngest children, Jonathan and
Rebecca FOX, rode in
hampers on horseback. After
the death of Absalom in about 1795 , the family
members signed some of the land over to sons, Jonathan
FOX, and Charles FOX. The remaining children and their mother, Christian
traveled with other families into Warren County, OH. Charles and
Jonathan were to join them a few years later. (David
and Sarah SUTTON( daughter of Rev. Abraham
Sutton) FOX; Charles and
Mary FOX; Bonham and Temperance FOX; Sampson
SARJEANT, whose wife was the recently deceased Ivy/Iva
FOX; David SUTTON and wife Anchor FOX;
Rebecca FOX and husband Bazil DEARTH; Jonathan
and Rebecca DEARTH FOX.) Other families that came about this time from
Washington county PA, were the McFARLAND, RILEY, and EDDY . Later
members of our FOX family also married into these
families. On the tombstone of the DEARTH family
in the Springboro, OH cemetery, is the name, Christian Fox
1737-1821. Christian
BONHAM FOX lived with the Dearth family. Her youngest
daughter, Rebecca, was married to Bazil
Dearth, son of Edward and Elizabeth. The
stone contains fourteen names and a memorial that
reads that the families "came to
Ohio by way of the Ohio River and landed near present day
Cincinnati April 10th of 1798, where there was a village of less than
thirty houses at the time." In the old history and
Atlas of Warren county, Absalom FOX (son of
David and grandson of Absalom) stated that he came with his
parents to Warren county in 1798. (there is a picture of Absalom
in this atlas.) They
worked their way along the Waynes Mile Long Road to the waters of
Clear Creek and settled there before Ohio became
a State. Our ancestors,
David and wife Sarah SUTTON FOX, and children
settled near the Fork of Todds Creek just beyond
South Lebanon, one mile from the present day Kings Island Park.
The Fellowship Christian Church and cemetery is on
their land. David built a grist mill and ran a
copper still on the creek. David
and Sarah and many of the children and relatives
of this FOX family are buried in the Fellowship cemetery.
Close cousins of this FOX and DEARTH family settled in Champaign
County, OH.
