Rev. Maxwell Rice's Book of Births, Marriages, and
Deaths
Explanation
Maxwell Ware Rice was born 1 Aug. 1882 in
Williamstown, Mass. and spent his boyhood there. He attended
Lawrenceville School in N.J. and graduated from Williams College
in 1903. He attended the Episcopal Theological School, Cambridge,
Mass. from 1903 - 1906. He served as curate of St. Georges Church
in N.Y. from 1906 - 08. He then went to Salt Lake City and served
as chaplain for the U. of Utah, St. Mark's Hospital, and St.
Andrews Church.
On 18 June 1914 he married Alice Marion Monger in
Salt Lake. She was born 4 July 1893 in Bayonne, N.J., the
daughter of a Welsh immigrant from Swansea named Ivor John Monger
and his wife Lucinda Clayton of New Jersey.
In 1918 he left Utah to become rector of the Zion
Church, Wappinger's Falls, N.Y. In 1945 he went to the church
at Dalton, Mass. In 1951 he retired and moved to Eagle Bridge,
N.Y. (actually to Richard Rice's farm in White Creek). In
1972 he and Alice moved into a nursing home in Northampton, Mass.
He died 20 Oct 1982, a few months past his 100th birthday. Alice
died in 1984, also in Northampton.
This book is transcribed from an old 1926 diary he
used as a notebook to record birthdays, anniversaries, and
deaths. It is in poor condition, mice have chewed up the edges of
the first third, some of the writing is faded to the point of
being almost illegible, the binding is crumbling, and Rev.
Maxwell scribbled lists in it when he got old, as he did many of
his other books. I am attempting to transcribe it as well as I
can.
Since most names just have a year date after them,
it is often hard to tell whether this is a birth or death date.
Marriages have two people listed.
Theodore Rice, November 1999.
