Isaiah Gulliver Passed Away Yesterday Morning
Had Served 33 years as court crier and under 4 judges.
Isaiah Gulliver, aged 84 years, died at 4:10 a.m., yesterday at
his home 26 West 2nd Avenue, South Williamsport, following a general breakdown.
Thirty-three years ago, Judge Metzger appointed Mr. Gulliver
court crier, an office he held continuously from that date, serving under four judges,
Metzger, Mitchell, Hart, Whitehead. His last official service at the December
criminal court. The last time he left his room was when he was carried downstairs on
New Year's Day that he might be there to greet the members of the bar as he had done on
New Year's Day for many years.
He was so thoroughly acquainted with the law library that the
attorneys never thought of going after a book when needed, just said "Bucky, get
_____" and he brought the needed book.
He was a skilled fisherman and never missed "opening
day" when it was physically possible for him to be there. He knew all the
tricks of camping and at one time had charge of the headquarters mess of the old 12th
regiment.
Mr. Gulliver was born August 24, 1836 in what is now Fairfield
Township, several miles north of Montoursville. His father, William Gulliver came
here from Boston, Mass. and engaged in farming. His mother, was Eliza Casselberry, a
native of the county. Isaiah was the oldest in the family of six children, of whom
but one, Mrs. Sarah Kuns, of McEwensville, is living.
As a lad he attended the public schools of the township and in
his young manhood took up the vocation of a canal boatman, advancing to the point where he
was captain of his own boat.
In later years he followed rafting on the river during the days
of the lumber industry, and became a skilled river pilot. He foresook his occupation
to become court crier.
Mr. Gulliver was married December 24, 1858 to Elizabeth Foulkrod.
A union of 61 years was broken on March 9, 1920 when Mrs Gulliver died. The
following sons and daughter survive: Charles of Erie, James of Muncy, Mrs. A. A.
Park of Bradford, Edward of Williamsport, Frank of Bradford, Mrs. J. T. Kilbourn of
Williamsport, and Miss Anna at home. There are also eleven grandchildren and the
sister previously mentioned.
Mr. Gulliver lived for some time in Montoursville and then in the
city. He moved to South Williamsport just prior to the 1889 flood and for 32 years
resided in the dwelling where he died.
He was a charter member of the Masonic bodies of Montoursville
and also a member of St. John Episcopal Church, South Williamsport.
The funeral will take place at 10 o'clock thursday morning from
the residence. Interment will be made at Montoursville.

Warren S. A. Fulkrod defined the phrase "man of many
talents."
The Wellsboro native was a flyer, college athlete, soldier, gifted golfer, skier, hunter,
fisherman and a green-thumb gardener. And raising a family was one of his greatest
abilities, his children said.
Mr. Fulkrod, a Horseheads resident for nearly 40 years, died of a heart attack at his Fort
Myers, Fla., home on Friday. He was 65.
"He lived for golf," daughter Karen Spencer of Horseheads said. "When he
was at his best, he had a scratch handicap. He played golf about every day. It was a
minimum of five days a week.
"Golf is why he moved to Florida," she said. "His home was on the first tee
of the Hideaway Golf and Country Club. He had his golf cart under a canopy, and all he had
to do was hop in and go."
In fact, Mr. Fulkrod recently had qualified for the Professional Golf Association's Senior
Tour and was contemplating playing in some of its tournaments, Spencer said.
Well-known at area golf courses, Mr. Fulkrod ran the driving range at Corning Country Club
and volunteered at the LPGA Corning Classic, Spencer said.
Mr. Fulkrod graduated from Wellsboro High School in 1948, attended Mansfield State College
on a basketball scholarship and played for two seasons before joining the Air Force, said
son William Fulkrod of fort Lauderdale, Fla. he was a veteran of the Korean conflict,
rising to the rank of sergeant.
"He was responsible for training some of the special forces troops in skiing,"
Spencer said.
The Air Force put flying in Mr. Fulkrod's blood to say. He had a private pilot's license
and was active for many years in the Harris Hill "Lift Over Drag Club," a group
that flew radio-controlled aircraft.
"He had a Super Chipmunk, and an Aeronca, a Hurricane, a biplane, a P-38 and
several more," Spencer said. "At one time he had eight planes. He used to fly
them with my brother, and then he taught my son how to fly them. He really enjoyed
that."
There was little of life that Mr. Fulkrod didn't enjoy, Spencer and William Fulkrod said.
After leaving the service, Mr. Fulkrod moved to Horseheads and worked for Westinghouse
Electric Corp. for 33 years, spending most of that time as a financial planner. He retired
in 1986.
Mr. Fulkrod fished Catharine Creek for rainbow trout and hunted deer, including visits to
the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon where he hunted in his youth.
"He got a lot of deer," William Fulkrod said. "But after a point, he
decided he would just rather watch them than shoot them. He didn't want to kill them
anymore.
He just wanted to let them be free."
Family trips -- long and short -- were frequent occurrences, Spencer said.
"One summer, we took three weeks and went from Horseheads to San Francisco and
back," she said. "We saw everything from Yosemite to Yellowstone to San
Francisco Bay and Disneyland."
To the very last instant, Mr. Fulkrod remained active. he stayed at the Spencer home on
Pine Circle Extension for a month over Christmas, and helped put in a hardwood floor. He
returned to the area for a month or two during the summer and taught grandson Brian
Spencer how to play golf.
Mr. Fulkrod was planting a tree and went back in his home to get a dry shirt when he was
stricken.

Waterloo youth falls off tower, electrocuted
WATERLOO -- Louis Carl Smith Jr., 17, of Waterloo, was electrocuted in a fall from a
tower Saturday.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Genung Funeral Home.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in
Spring Brook Cemetery, Seneca Falls.
According to state police, Smith and two friends, Robert Heye, 16, of 313 W. Main St., and
Tracey Eanetta, 15, of 12 State St., were riding bikes along W. River Rd., just west of
the village at about 11:40 a.m. when they decided to stop. Smith and Heye reportedly began
climbing a tower supporting high tension power lines that run parallel to the road near
the Barge Canal, Eanetta watched from below.
After reaching the top, the pair began climbing down, but Smith apparently slipped and
fell over a live wire. Heye, about 10 feet below his friends, climbed back up to help, but
his hands were burned when he touched Smith's shirt.
Seneca County Coroner Arthur Schroeder pronounced Smith dead at the scene. Dr. Paul Jenks
examined the youth at Taylor Brown Memorial Hospital and Schroede declared the death to be
accidental due to electrocution.
Heye and Eanetta were both examined at the hospital where Heye received treatment for
burns on his hands.
Smith's body caused a short circuit which knocked out power in the area. A New York State
Electric & Gas Corp. crew turned off all electricity from the Geneva substation for
about two hours so Smith's body, draped over a crossbar 60 feet above the ground, could be
removed.
Smith, a sophomore at Waterloo High School, was born in Waterloo, son of Louis and
Jeannette Smith.

Mrs. Samuel Peters
Mrs. Mary E. Peters, wife of Samuel Peters, died on Tuesday, November 18, 1902, aged 43
years. Funeral services were held at her late residence, 2823 Pratt Street, Friday evening
and were conducted by the Rev. J.P.W. Blattenberger, D.D. The interment will be at Oxford,
Chester County today.
Mrs. Peters was the daughter of the late Jacob and Phoebe Foulkrod. She was born on a farm
at Oxford, Chester County, where she spent her early years. She was one of a family of
twelve children, two brothers and ten sisters. Mrs. Peters is survived by her husband and
two children, one of these, Miss Ethel E. Holton, a daughter by her first husband James
Holton; the other, Leona A. Peters, a daughter by her last marriage; also by six sisters,
Mrs. John Smith, Mrs. Charles Holton, Mrs. James Rugg, Mrs. David Taylor, Mrs. Elmer
Melrath, and Mrs. Christian Segar. One of these, Mrs. Christian Segar, resides in
Bridesburg.
Mrs. Peters, by birth and marriage, was related to many Bridesburg and Frankford families.
She has been confined to her bed for almost three years and a half. Her illness dated from
the death of her father, who was killed on the railroad near Oxford. She had gone there to
attend his funeral, when the excitement and the grief brought on a hemorrhage of the
lungs, and from that time her health began steadily to decline. She was a great sufferer,
and it was remarked by all who where in attendance upon her, or visited her, that a word
of complaint never escaped her lips. Throughout all these years of suffering she was
sustained by an unfaltering Christian faith. Mrs. Peters was of a quiet, retiring
disposition, and during most of the years spent here was an invalid, but all who knew her
esteemed her highly. Death came to her as a welcome relief from her sufferings. The
cemetery in which the interment will be made this afternoon is opposite the farm.

JACOB FOULKROD KILLED.
Struck by the Pay Train While Walking on the Tracks Between Oxford and Lincoln.
Jacob Foulkrod, an aged resident of Oxford, met with a tragic death last Thursday morning
abut 8:30 o'clock, by being struck by the pay train on the Central Division Railroad,
while walking on the track at West Branch creek.
Mr. Foulkrod had been visiting his sisters at Lincoln University, and on Thursday morning
started for Oxford. He was crossing the trestle bridge over West Branch creek, and was
unmindful of danger, as it was not on the time of regular trains. When he was about
halfway across the bridge the pay train came around the curve at a high rate of speed. The
sudden danger apparently bewildered the old man. He ran forward, then back, and then, as
though paralyzed with fright, stood on the track and was dashed to pieces by the terrible
force with which the engine struck him. Engineer Taylor used every effort to stop his
engine in time to save the life of Mr. Foulkrod, but it was impossible.
Conductor Farra ran the train to Lincoln, where a box was procured, and the train then ran
back to the scene of the tragedy, and the remains were placed in the box and taken to
Lincoln.
Deputy Coroner W.C. Russell of Oxford went to Lincoln and held an inquest, impaneling as a
jury: W.H. Weaver, W.H. Nethery, A.L. Estrekin, James H. Fahey, W.J. Jenness and John F.
Weaver. The verdict rendered was that Mr. Foulkrod met his death by being struck by the
pay train. The railroad company was exonerated from blame.
The remains were brought to Oxford Thursday afternoon by S.V. Ringler, and taken to the
undertaking establishment of A.M. Garver, where they were prepared for burial and taken to
the residence of Mrs. Christian Segars, a daughter, on Broad Street. The funeral was held
on Friday at 10 o'clock a.m. Revs. A.D. Mink, W. Barrows and F.B. Harvey conducted the
services. Interment was made in the cemetery at Nottingham.
Jacob Foulkrod was in his 81st year. He was born in Bucks county, and was a son of George
Foulkrod, formerly of Lower Oxford. He came to Oxford when a young man and engaged in
shoemaking. He was proficient in his business, and followed it for many years. Mr.
Foulkrod married Phebe Moore, a daughter of Sampson Moore of Lower Oxford. She died
several years ago. The following children survive: Mrs. John Smith, Glenroy; Mrs. Charles
Holton, Mrs. David Taylor, Mrs. Christian Segars, Oxford; Mrs. James R~gg, Nottingham;
Mrs. Samuel Peters and Mrs. Elmer Melrath, Philadelphia. Mr. Foulkrod leaves four sisters:
Mrs. Ada Garr and Mrs. Henry Bailey, Philadelphia; Mrs. Edward Jones and Mrs. Caroline T.
Baldwin of Lincoln University.
