Generation 1 - The Family of Isaac Foster and Elizabeth Simpson.

In Fayette County, Kentucky, on October 12, 1811, we discover the first member in our branch of the Foster family. The event taking place is the marriage between Isaac Foster and Elizabeth Simpson, with Abraham Simpson, as surety.

Looking ahead to the 1850 census for Schuyler County, Missouri, where Isaac and Elizabeth would be living, it is learned Isaac was born in South Carolina. At the time of the 1850 census, Isaac is 56 years old. The census also reports that Elizabeth was born in Kentucky and is 55 years old. Notable is the presence of their daughter, Jane, 17, also born in Kentucky. We will learn more about her later. Her age and place of birth indicate the family left Kentucky after 1833.

This census places the year of birth for Isaac at around 1794 and for Elizabeth around 1795. With this information, we now know that at the time of this marriage, Isaac is around 17 and Elizabeth is around 16 years old.

Using the occupation entered on the same 1850 census for Schuyler County, Missouri, it is learned that Isaac Foster was a minister, but it is doubtful he preached at the young age of 17. If not he, like so many others in this time, was probably a farmer.

Further examination of the marriage records show consent of the parents for both parties was given. This suggests that Fayette County was the home of the Fosters and Simpsons for some considerable time. It takes time to properly court a prospective bride.

Abraham Simpson was again surety at other marriages in Fayette County. He acted as such in the marriage of America Simpson and John Huffman on January 9, 1817. This suggests that America is the sister of Elizabeth.

After their marriage, Isaac and Elizabeth moved to the small town of Sulphur Well, Jessamine County, Kentucky. Sulphur Well is even today, a small community just south of Lexington. It was in Sulphur Well, on April 03, 1815, where their son, Fountain Tinsley Foster was born.
