Including McLeod, Hudson, Freeman, Ives, Davis, Boykin, McCaskil, Josey, Yates and others

An incomplete listing of burial locations of the descendants of Alexander and Sarah McIntosh McLeod, and of Daniel and Catherine McLean McLeod. Also included are names related by marriage and/or close friendship. As research continues into the sidelines (spouses of relatives) the burial sites of many people distantly connected to our family are found. For the purpose of making a permanant record of all burials known to date, this page now includes burials of non related persons. McLeods will be noted with generational information - see note below,

Not all burials have been proven by either photograph or church records. Sources are listed in red font where available. Where no source is available, the information is unverified by document or photograph. Corrections and additions are welcome, where possible please list source of information.

Due to previous confusion regarding actual burial locations as a result of several different word of mouth sources, no permanant changes will be made to this page without proof of burial, i.e., Sumter Cemetery Book, Church Records, etc. When conflicting information is received without documentation, a notation of the conflict will be added to the page.

Update: June 2001 - In June of 2001, Purdy Belvin McLeod Jr. made a trip to Antioch Baptist Church where many of our ancestors are buried. Purdy found the Church Cemetery had been vandalized by a motorbike and many of our family's stones are now lying in pieces on the ground.

The vandalism confirmed the importance of documenting where our family members are buried. This Index of Burials became even more important to our descendants. My children may never be able to sit in front of one of the stones and be in awe of how many have come before them. I want to at least provide a record of where the stone lay before time and miscreants destroyed it.

Update: June 2003 -

During a trip to Lugoff, Kershaw County, South Carolina for a Descendants of Jesse Lazarus McLeod Reunion, my father, husband and I made a stop at Antioch Baptist Church. The stones which were vandalized in June of 2001 have been fixed where possible. The stone of John N. McLeod, which was said to be laying face down, has been repaired and cleaned. The stone of Alexander and Harriet Yates McLeod is laid against the bottom of its own stone.

Antioch was founded in March of 824, the month that the estate of Alexander McLeod, husband of Sarah McIntosh, went into probate. To date, we have not found the full records of the church and its initial, or founding, membership. A partial record was found in the Meyers Family File located at the Camden Archives in June of 2003. These partial records show Male Members in Fellowship up to October 10 1828, but do not include any of the male children of Alexander and Sarah. This does not preclude membership as Baptist Churches typically consider only those who have been baptized (made a profession of faith) to be members of the church. In fact, we never find John N. McLeod, who is buried there, in any membership rolls; this is fully explained in his obituary which states he never made a profession of faith. In June of 2004, a second partial record was found in the Sumter Genealogy Center; the information found has been incorporated into the records found in 2003.

It is believed that our McLeods were, like most of the Scottish immigrants, of the Presbyterian Faith until the third and later generations. Therefore, it is unlikely that Alexander and Sarah are buried here with their children and grandchildren. They were either buried on their own family property located on the Horsepen Branch, a tributary of the Beaverdam Branch of the Scape Or river, or possible at the McLeod Family Cemetery aka New Hope Presbyterian Church Cemetery which was first owned by Angus and Nancy McCutchen MacLeod and then passed through the generations. Daniel's children, John Robert and Annie McLeod Boykin are buried there along with others of the family.

The children of Alexander and Sarah are buried at Antioch, all except for Jane McLeod Davis - her burial location is unknown. Perhaps the children of Alexander attended the church with friends, most likely the Davis' and Arrants family, after their father's death.

McLeod Generation III: Alexander E. McLeod b. April 06, 1815 d. March 30, 1895 and Harriet Yates McLeod b. November 06, 1817 d. July 01, 1902 -Second son of Alex and Sarah McLeod - A shared stone, almost unreadable as of August 2000. One picture taken in 1994 shows the writing fairly clearly. McLeod Generation III: Catherine McLeod Mosely - b. Abt. 1818 d. January 29, 1893 - daughter of Alex and Sarah McLeod - A single stone standing alone in what appears to be half a plot. Her husband, John Mosely was lost in a fishing accident on the Wateree River. The stone shows her date of death but estimates her age using the word "about". McLeod Generation III: John N. McLeod - b. Abt. 1810 d. July 14, 1862 - Eldest son of Alex and Sarah McLeod - date of death is confirmed by his obituary in the Camden Confederate Newspaper Obituary. McLeod Generation III: Angus McLeod - b. Abt. 1820 d. June 21, 1864 - youngest son of Alex and Sarah McLeod - A Confederate Soldier, Angus is buried beside his only child William, also a Confederate Soldier. Both stones were placed by Eliza Arrants McLeod Boykin, b. May 26, 1825 d. bef. 1876 - the Widow of Angus. Eliza is buried between her husband and her son, but her stone, now broken, faces the opposite direction from theirs, and does not include the name McLeod. It is unknown at this time who placed Eliza's stone there, but I assume it was her second husband, Col. Steven M. Boykin. McLeod Generation IV: Norman A. McLeod - b. April 06, 1839 d. January 18, 1863 - eldest son of Alex and Harriet McLeod - a Confederate Soldier, he died at the age of 24 and was apparently unmarried. A Member of the Kershaw Guards, (sources: Military Roster/Obituary) he has been confused with Norman McLeod, h/o Elizabeth Lackey, but obituary and grave placement show parentage. McLeod Generation IV: Alice H. McLeod - b. November 16, 1854 d. March 27, 1922 - Maiden name Cook - wife of Mannius Baum McLeod - son of John N. McLeod and Catherine Davis. Mannius is not buried here but in a mass grave near where he and several of his children and grandchildren were burned to death in a school fire. Old Scotch Cemetery
Bethune, South Carolina

There are many unmarked graves in the Old Scotch Cemetery - and a lot of McLeods late of Scotland are buried there. The early immigrants would travel miles to be buried with kinsmen and many of those buried in the cemetery may not even have lived in Kershaw or Sumter.

In the McLeod File at the Sumter Genealogical Society, a paper exists which states that Daniel McLeod, the husband of Catherine McLean and father of John Robert McLeod, is buried in this cemetery "near the old pine tree". If he is, his grave is unmarked. No other family legend regarding the burial of our first and second generation McLeods has survived, but I do not believe that Daniel is buried at the Scotch Cemetery.....for several reasons....

1) McLeod Cemetery aka New Hope Presbyterian Church Cemetery lies on the land owned by Angus MacLeod from 1820 - 1826, Margaret McLeod until 1827 and Nancy McLeod Bethune until 1839.
2) At least one stone in that cemetery dates to the early 1820's. Angus MacLeod died cr 1831 after burials had begun on that property.
2) Daniel died in 1852 when burials were taking place in this cemetery; McLeod Mill Pond lies beside the cemetery; it would seem likely that he would have been buried on family property.

the mystery of Daniel's burial site may never be solved....
