FTDNA is now offering testing of Markers 68 - 111 and results for the L165 and ACMS projects are now coming in . This page has been updated to reflect this new level of testing, changes include:

Methodology

Hypothetical MacLeod Haplotype(HMH): The Haplotype is determined by comparing the genetically related R1b1a2 kits in the ACMS Project. The most common allele (value) at each marker is then determined to hypothetically be the Ancestral Allele of the Founder. Because there are genetically related individuals who do not carry the MacLeod Surname, in the L165 Project we refer to this group as Cluster Two but the two Haplotypes are identical. Deduced Ancestral Haplotypes/Family Haplotype - when known cousins participate in the DNA testing together, we can more acurately determine their Family Modals. Using the Haplotpye described above, we can see where markers have mutated in each paternal line since their Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA). We then use their Family Haplotype in determining the genetic distance to the HMH instead of their individual results. The use of these Family Haplotypes also allows us to avoid skewing any marker value towards a heavily represented family or branch. We also use a Deduced Ancestral Haplotype when Branch Indicators are found between two or more individuals regardless of a lack of documentation leading to their MRCA.

The tables show only the Deduced and Family Haplotypes. Links are provided to allow the viewing of the kits used to deduce the haplotype. Those for whom no information is available are "targeted" at the bottom of this page. Those for whom there is genealogical data are linked to a "Branch Page".

ID: This will show either an individual kit number, an Ancestral Family Haplotype, or a Deduced Ancestral Haplotype. Where a Family or Deduced Haplotype is used, an approximate "age" of the Haplotype is shown. In example - Alexander MacLeod born 1783 in Scotland - testing three of his descendants gives us an idea of what his haplotype was in 1783 - that haplotype may have been identical to his father's or may have had a mutation. The Haplotype is only as "old" as the most recent common ancestor of any group of recently related participants.

Branch Indicators: A shared pattern of mutation away from the Hypothetical MacLeod Haplotype which indicates a more Recent Common Ancestor

Unique Haplotypes These are individuals who a) tested without known cousins and b) do not share any mutations which could be a Branch Indicator

Genetic Distance: The genetic distance shown is to the HMH (not to other individuals or branches). It is shown for the highest level of testing at which the haplotype has been determined, a link is provided to FTDNA's interpretation of Genetic Distance.

DYS 389 - Markers 10 and 12 - From the earliest days of the ACMS Project (2005), there has been a 50/50 split between 13/29 and 14/30 at this multi-copy marker. At this time, there is no way to determine which combination is Ancestral (carried by the Founder). When determining the HMH using Ancestral Haplotypes rather than individual kits, the most common alleles are 13/29 so we have defaulted to the 13/29 of P312 and L165.

TMRCA: The Time to Most Recent Common Ancestor is to the HMH (not to other individuals or branches). The year range is that given by McGee YUtility and does not take into account in-betweeners.

The year range is linked to a TMRCA Chart (in - betweeners can be seen on this chart).

The Deduced Ancestral Haplotype TMRCA's will be more accurate than those determined for the Unique Haplotypes; in Unique Haplotypes we cannot determine the age of any mutation while in Deduced or Family Haplotypes some mutations in each paternal line are ignored which refines the TMRCA. We encourage all participants to recruit a cousin or two into projects. Please email if you are a documented cousin to someone else in the project and a Family Haplotype has not been used to determine your TMRCA.

The TMRCA is also calculated by the number of markers tested; for example 480 years for a 37 - 3 becomes a 450 years for a 67 - 3 - the higher the level of testing the more confidence is placed in the genetic relationship.

Note: a (?) means that 1) the modal value at one or more markers has yet to be determined for the HMH and/or 2) additional testing will reveal more because not all members of a family or branch have tested at the same level.

Haplotypes, Genetic Distances and TMRCA's are generated by McGee YUtility using FTDNA Mutation Rates / 95% Probability / 30 year generations


Test Results for markers 68 - 111

The L165 Modal Haplotype and the MacLeod/Cluster Two Modal Haplotype are both still emerging. Many more participants are needed to determine some of the more volatile markers seen in the table below. We need as many participants from each branch/family as possible to test at this level so that the modals for their branch/family are also made clear.

In example, Kit 41571 is one member of a family of three. His 67 marker haplotype was a genetic distance of 1 and represented the family haplotype; he was "due" a mutation but had three. In order to determine which took place in his paternal line only and which took place prior to Alexander MacLeod's birth in 1783, we need both of the other family members to participate at this level.
