Cluster One - MacNeil of Barra, Buie of Jura and the Olive (formerly Black) Sub-Group of MacDonald

This page has been created as a "companion" page to the R-L165 Project at FTDNA. The information has been extracted from YSearch, the Clan Donald Project, the MacNeil Project, and emails from various members of this group.



Cluster One

Cluster One (C1) consists of MacNeils of Barra, Buies of Jura and MacDonalds (Olive {formerly} Black Sub-Group of Clan Donald Project) and one Cameron. TMRCA for the surnames is within genealogically relevent time frames unlike the rest of the L165 Group to each other, therefore, the combined modal haplotype of the three groups has been designated Cluster One and used in determining both the haplotype of L165/S68 and the L165 TMRCA estimates in order to avoid skewing the L165/S68 Modal Haplotype (emerging); using each surname individually skews the modalat certain markers across the 67 markers tested to date.

Clan Donald uses a color coded method of organizing its project results; the MacDonalds and Buies of Jura who are members of that project were designated as the Black Sub Group in part because of their shared R1b Haplotype. The color used to describe their sub- group was recently changed to Olive by the Administrator of that project. In various genetic studies, the group is referred to as either the Black Sub-Group or more recently, as the Olive Sub-Group; in example The Klyosov Paper, Russian Academy of DNA Genealogy, June 2011, Volume 4, no. 6 refers to the Black Sub-Set or Sub-Group of MacDonalds on page 1213. We use the identifier Olive Sub-Group of Clan Donald (formerly known as the Black Sub-Group) MacDonald to indicate that this is the group of haplotypes referred to in the Klyosov Paper (and/or others). The tables below do not include all markers between 38 and 67 ; only those markers that are significant have been included in the table. See R-L165/S68 Results Table for full results or refer to one of the projects linked above.

For the MacNeils and Buies, TMRCA has been calculated only at the 37 marker level since so few have upgraded to the 67 marker level of testing / MacDonalds have been calculated at 67 markers. TMRCA calculated at 95%, 30 year generations and FTDNA mutation rates at YUtility. Significant markers in the 38 - 67 level of testing have been included in the table but not used to calculate TMRCA.

Where green shading is found in the column 2, the person is a member of the L165/S68 Project - All individuals found on this page are eligible for membership in the R-L165 Project based upon their genetically matching positive individuals - testing is not required in all cases but is recommended for all individuals found on this page. Deduced Ancestral Haplotypes have been used in the calculation where possible to avoid skewing the modals toward a branch more heavily represented in the project.



MACNEIL OF BARRA

Each kit in the table below is within allowable genetic distances to either the modal itself or to another kit within the modal (37-0 to 37-4) / Deduced Ancestral Haplotypes have been used wherever possible to avoid skewing the modal at any given marker in the deduced ancestral haplotype. There appear to be three to five separate modal haplotypes within this group - shading indicates where branch indicators may be emerging. Calculating TMRCA using the five suspected modal haplotypes they all appear to have shared a common ancestor around 480 years past which corresponds with calculations that do not separate the suspected haplotypes.

Within a branch or known family, where one or more kits match the MacNeil of Barra Deduced Ancestral Haplotype, the modal for the family is determined to be that of the MacNeil of Barra Deduced Haplotype with mutations taking place since the branch or family last shared an ancestor with each other.

A note about the names seen in the table below. A member of our project recently inquired as to the meaning of some of the names and whether it refered to the race of the individual. Used as they are in the table, they are typically "identifiers" used to distinguish men of the same name one from another.

"Mor" " meaning "Great" or "Big" i.e. Alasdair "Mor" MacNeil of Brebheig should be interpreted as Alasdair the Big/Great MacNeil of Brebheig .

"Og" typically means the "younger" as in Donald Og MacNeil or Donald the younger MacNeil.

"Dubh" or "Black" - typically means the individual had black hair while another of the same name may have had red or blond or brown hair.

TMRCA TABLE

The table was originated by YUtility however I have cleared most of the cells to allow the "in betweeners" to be seen more easily; reading left to right, the TMRCA is not adjusted, reading column two top to bottom reflects the TMRCA adjusted for the in-betweener.

As the table shows, most of the kits in the table above shared a common ancestor between 390 and 480 years past (1530 -1620 AD). Those kits which have only tested to 25 markers are outside of this year range but upgrading will most likely bring them into it.

I have run TMRCA on 37 markers due to the small number of upgraded kits; in most cases, those who have tested at the 67 marker level would see their TMRCA's narrowed by approximately 30 years.

Cameron is closer to Cluster One than to any others in the R-L165 Project and therefore is included in Cluster calculations of the R-L165 Modal Haplotype; including him as an individual clearly skews the modal at DYS 393 to "12" (Cluster One Modal is the "in betweener" for Cameron and the rest of the R-L165 group). Testing of the Cameron kit for L165 has been requested to verify this inclusion in Cluster One and to rule out random convergence on STR's which are significant to the Cluster One Modal Haplotype. Should Cameron be positive for R-L165, then as the project grows, we may find that Cameron will be part of another Cluster that is related to Cluster One just outside of genealogically relevent times.
