The Ilalaole - Pa Branch
This branch is directly associated with the
Chong - AhNee branch.

The 1900 Federal Census for the Territory of Hawaii shows two men named
Pa on the island of Kauai.
One resided in Haena with his wife, Wahinekeouli Milikaa, and was
called Pa Kahoohanohano or Panui.
The other lived in Kalihiwai with his wife, Koa, and shows up
on the 1900 Census as just PA. It is this latter Pa to whom we are
descended, but we have no idea of who is was or from where he came.
In fact, we have our serious doubts that his given name was even
Hanohano as the Family Search record suggests. Anyone?

Speaking of Koa, the only place we know in which her
surname is recorded as "Naehu" is on the
Family Search record. We found her in the 1910 Federal Census for
Papaa Village, Kawaihau District on Kauai, living with her grandson,
Eddie AhNee. On this census, her name is recorded as "Koa Mokulei." Does
anyone know why? It does not appear that she was remarried, but we have
no way of knowing this.

The
first marriage of Mele Malamalama Pa, daughter of Pa and Koa,
was to Joseph Ilalaole (born abt. 1850) on 06 Jun 1871, and they lived on Kauai.
Some records indicate that he was born in Puna on the Big Island;
others, that he was born on Kauai. Just where was Joseph Ilalaole born?

Joseph Ilalaole and Mele Malamalama Pa had a son, Joseph Ilalaole, Jr.
The 1910 Federal Census shows several clues:
- Mele's youngest child (from her second marriage
to Fun Kum Liu Ah-Nee), Lily Adams, lived with Joseph Ilalaole Jr.,
her half-brother.
- This Joseph Ilalaole, Jr. was born around 1883.
- His wife was named Mrs. Elizabeth P. Ilalaole.
- And, Joseph Jr. and Elizabeth had a son named
Joseph who, at the time, was 1 year and 3 months old.
Is Joseph Ilalaole Jr. the same Joseph Ilalaole who
was born in Puna, Hawaii Island and became a renowned chanter and
composer? Is it relevant that Joseph Jr. appears to have had
brother named Moses Ilalaole who was the father of Rachel Nahaleelua
Ilalaole Mahuiki?
