Fordington

Notes:-

The original registers for this period exist in the Dorset History Center & there appear to be some transcription errors between those records and the Bishops Transcripts transcribed here which were done in some cases several years later by the vicar. The originals need to be transcribed, any additional information added including missing years, and corrections made where appropriate.

In the early years the records are badly damaged and difficult to read and where this is the case I have tried to verify names against the marriage register to improve accuracy and cross referenced. They are also composite registers up to 8 th Oct 1782 with a column down one side indicating whether the entry is a baptism, marriage or burial. Where this edge is missing it is not always possible to be sure whether an entry is a baptism or a burial. Female baptisms are also in the IGI and were taken from original registers so I have added any additional information available and annotated accordingly.

In the late 1790's there was a large influx of Militia men to the Fordington Barracks which led to many marriages to local girls. See my comments under “Overseers Accounts 1798-1802 regarding the Militia and the rebellion of 1798. Fordington High Street was also a continuation from the lower end of Dorchester and many couples married in one and raised families in the other. In transcribing these registers I became aware of many such associations and have therefore added comment where appropriate.

We have now been asked by the CLDS to add Film Image reference numbers to transcriptions and this now enables us to quickly re-locate entries which are often very difficult to read. The films can be ordered via the CLDS to view but the image references given here come from discs sent to us by the CLDS for transcription and are not on the film themselves.

[Note: prior to 1750 a bastard had settlement where he/she was born. After 1750 illegitimacy rose sharply. If the father married the mother during pregnancy the child had its parental settlement. This might lead to deportation of the family to the fathers parish. I note that a Samuel BUTT of St Peters in Dorchester married a Sarah Seager in Fordington on 15 May 1773 by licence and this suggests that Sarah was indeed pregnant at marriage . The A2A website also shows a removal order being issued some years later on 3 July 1784 for Removal of “Samuel BUTT ; Sarah his wife and Sarah their Daughter from All Saints Parish in Dorchester to St Peters”. Presumably Samuel fell on hard times and sought relief from the Churchwardens at All Saints. This would have been rendered but followed by an examination to determine his place of settlement. The ref at the Dorset History Centre is PE/DO/As/Ou/4/2/18.
