WENTZ- was born c1770-1775. Evidence suggests that he may be from York
County, Pa. He appears to have died sometime between 1830-40.
Philip may be the son of Philip
& Anna Maria Holtzapple Wentz (of Dover/Manchester Twp., York Co., PA
area) OR he may be a descendant of Nicholas & Rebecca Fickes Wentz (of
Reading Twp., Adams Co., PA area).
Philip was married to Barbara (BAKER?)
by December, 1796. Barbara was born c1780 and died April 1859 (1860) in
Bedford Co., PA
Barbara appears to be the daughter of Philip Baker. The last will and testament of
Philip Baker, Menallen Twp., York (later Adams Co) was written on 2 December
1785 and was proven on 22 December 1785. His will mentions "Barbara
Beacor" as one of his 13 children. York Co. (PA) Orphans Court;
1787: Elizabeth Becker, widow of Philip Becker of Menallen Twp., dec'd.,
asks the court to appoint guardians for the persons and estates of....Barbara
aged about 7 years..... The court appoints Nicholas Neuman of Manheim
Twp. to be the such guardian. York Co. (PA) Orphans Court; 27 Dec. 1796:
"...Barbara Wintz formerly Barbara Baker, a minor child of Philip Baker,
deceased" asks the court that she be permitted to choose her husband,
Philip Wentz, as her guardian. The court approves her request. (Henry
Slagle is listed as being discharged as her guardian at this time.) On
28 December, 1796: the balance of the guardianship account of Henry
Slagle, Esqr., late the guardian of Barbara Backer, one of the minor children
of Philip Backer, dec'd., intermarried with Philip Wentz; the balance of the
account is given to Philip Wentz, now the guardian of sd. Barbara Baker
Wentz.
This above information suggests that Barbara Baker Wentz' approximate
year-of-birth would be 1780; this would be consistent with the ages listed in
the federal census' for Barbara Wentz, wife of Philip Wentz (of Bedford Co.,
Pa.).
The PA 1860 Mortality Schedule states that a Barbara VANCE died from
dropsy; in Bedford Co., Pa., aged 82y; born in Pa.
