»  John grew up in Culpeper Co., Virginia. He served in the American Revolution as a cavalryman in Colonel William Washington's Third Dragoons of General Nathaniel Greene's Army. He was at the battles of Cowpens and Guilford Courthouse. While on this campaign of about three months he visited the area where he would later settle.
The Flynt family was large and there was not enough land for them all in Virginia and the land in North Carolina had good possibilities. A family tradition states that John and his brother William brought about twenty-five starving cavalry horses from Colonel Washington's unit to the spot where they later settled in search for forage. They found open meadowland and wild pea vines along the bottom land. They dearly loved horses, and thought that if animals could find food outdoors in the winter, this was the place for them to come back and live.
The family all came; John and his family, his father's family, and his brother and sisters and their families. They brought slaves, horses, cattle and household goods. John received a grant of 200 acres on the waters of Mill Creek, Stokes Co, NC on the 29 Nov 1797. He remained there until he died.

Note* Speculation on possible maiden names; Although the maiden name of Catharine is not known it has been suggested from the names of her children and that her maiden name may have been Meredith, Narias, or Norris. She had named the oldest son Perry for his grandmother Flynt's maiden name, Ann Perry, her son Richard for his grandfather Richard Flynt and possibly Meredith for her maiden name (Catharine Meredith?). There were three Meredith families in old Stokes Co, John, James and William.
