ALLENPORT STEEL MILL FIRE

JAN 2, 1957

$10,000 Fire Damage In Allenport Plant; Operations Normal

Locker Room Section Near Finishing Department Razed

Fire broke out on the locker room near the No. 4 tube mill at the Allenport plant of Pittsburgh Steel Co. shortly before noon yesterday causing an estimated $10,000 damage.

The fire roared through the locker room building, adjacent to the mill section destroying the interior.  The flames almost reached the roof.

Flames spread to the No. 5 mill's finishing department, inflicting some damage there.

Fireman said the blaze struck about 11:20 p.m. while the mill was "down" for New Year's Day.  Only construction workers and a craneman were working in the finishing department.

The craneman, Joel NOEL, spotted the fire and sounded the alarm.  The men attempted to beat our the flames, but were unsuccessful.

Four Companies

The Allenport fireman extinguished the blaze at 2 p.m.  Charleroi, California and Stockdale fireman answered the alarm, but were not needed.

The fire damaged electrical machinery but the necessary repairs were made before the mill resumed operations at midnight.

The intense heat of the flames broke windows in the skylight at the No. 5 mill.  The windows were covered with tarpaulin today to protect workers from the cold.

P. E. SANCE, vice-president of operations, said the mill resumed operations at the beginning of the midnight shift.

SANCE praised the work of the firemen.  He said:

"As usual, we owe quite a lot to the volunteer fire companies in this area for their quick work in putting out the fire."

Origin of the fire has not yet been determined, according to Allenport Fire Chief John COLDITZ, who estimated the damage.
