McDonald PA Outlook

A picturesque character

D. J. JOHNSON, 78, years old, is a colored man who lives at Jumbo with his wife and five children and for the past six years has made for himself there a living by cobbling. He is a native of Chesterfield county, Va., where he was for 47 years the property of Captain COX (of Co. D., 41st Virginia, during the war). JOHNSON went through the war as a body servant with his master, and was at the Appomattox surrender. He is one of the most interesting and picturesque of the many odd characters in our motley McDonald population.

He has had 27 children. He was all through the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia. Says he was not willing to fight any and his master would not allow him to do it. But when a boy, being muscular and spirited, he was often recalcitrant and as often tied up and tremendously cow-hided. He was always worth $2500 but was never sold. His master was a fighter “from way back” and always rushed headlong into every battle, but was never hurt. JOHNSON was near the “Crater” battle at Petersburg and saw sights that made his eyes bulge. This old man has in him more interesting history than many a 500-page book.
