Article from the The Washington Observer
newspaper, Washington Co., Pa., Tues., Sept. 1, 1959, p. 19:
[Large Photo of School with Caption: "Abandoned East End School in
Centerville Borough"] - [heading]: "Centerville East End
School" [followed by] "Centerville East End School Closed; 50
Years in Service - Residents of Centerville Borough were surprised when
school authorities announced that the East End school building, situated
in the eastern extremity of the borough, near the West Brownsville line,
would be abandoned for school purposes beginning at once.
Built about half
a century ago, the East End school was one of the leading schools in the
borough.
Word has been bruited
around for some time hat ultimate abandonment of the building was
anticipated since Centerville became a part of the Bethlehem-Center
School Jointure, but abandonment of the building this year was unlooked
for.
Pupils scheduled
to attend the East End school have been assigned to other schools in the
jointure.
The joint system
includes Deemston Borough, East Bethlehem Township, Beallsville Borough,
Marianna Borough, West Bethlehem Township and Centerville Borough.
Total
enrollment in the jointure now stands at about 3,400, including about
750 each in the senior and junior high schools, and some 1,900
elementary school pupils.
Included in
the teaching staff for the final year at East End were Albert Seghi,
principal; Mrs. Irma Martin, Mrs. Anna Watkins, Mrs. David Ropp and Miss
Alma Baker."
