Obituaries have changed drastically over the years.  Early obits may have only stated name, age at death, residence, and date of death (or reference to the day of week), such as: (example only) John Smith, aged 66, of West Bethlehem Twp. died on the 22nd inst. of December.

Since newspapers were one major method of communication within a community, obituaries began to carry more information, especially for a member of a "pioneer family," from a prominent family, or for the death of prominent person.  However, the first order of business was news items, so obituaries were often shortened to use as "fillers" on needed pages.
