James TOONE was born on 26 Jan 1807 in Mecklenburg Co., VA. He died on 26 Dec 1881. He was buried in Toone Cemetery, Toone, Hardeman Co., TN. The Toone family was among the early settlers of Hardeman County,
arriving in time to be recorded in the 1830 census. Settling in the
Clover Creek are, James Toone acquired much land. In 1856 he
contracted to have guilt a portion of the Illinois Central Railroad
from Mud\rdaugh branch toward Teague Station; he underbid the cost.
To satisfy all concerned in the building of the railroad line, James
Toone lost acreage and other assets. The town of Toone is named from
him.

James Toone's name was on the cornerstone of the first Gayosa Hotel of
Memphis; he was the contractor and builder.

One of the earliest sewing machines in Hardeman County was on the
plantation where it was used to manufacture work clothes for the
plantation workers.

James Toone and his family were members of the Cumberland Presbyterian
Church. They attended the new Hope and Greenwood churches near Toone
where he was a ruling Elder. His son, James, was shown as an elder
pruchasing land for the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Bolivar when
it was organized in 1868.

Over the years as the children were establishing homes, James and
Elizabeth Toone gave land and other property to them.
