in Worcester and settled in Stratford-upon-Avon. Chambers
denies that there is any ground for connecting the Astley
family with the family that held land of the manor of
Swanscombe, Kent until the time of Edward IV [1]. There was a
Combes family at the Priory manor of Wroxall near Stratford by
the middle of the 14th century [2]. The John Combe and his wife
who joined the Gild of Knowle in 1460 may have been members of
this family. There appears to be some connection, now
untraceable, with the Combes family at Stoke Newington
(Middlesex) and afterwards at Hemel Hempstead (Hertfordshire),
which used the same arms as those granted to the Stratford
family in 1584, Ermine three lions passant in pale Gules [3].
