Henry FLEETE (Sr.) was born in 1600 in County Kent, England. Born in London, England. He immigrated in Oct 1621 to Lancaster Co., VA. He died before 8 May 1661. Died sometime between the date of that court session, September 17, 1660 and May 8, 1661. Many published books and records often showed the date of decease is November 15, 1660. He was buried on 8 May 1661 in Lancaster Co., VA. Henry Fleete was buried at his home in Lancater County presumably on the small tidewater island known as Fleet's Island. Later his son, Henry Fleete, Jr., wrote in his will, "My desire is to be buried by my father and that the burying place be handsomely bricked in at the expense of my estate." There is a local legend that many years ago as the shore line as receding, ancient gravestone could be seen at low tide in the vicinity of the old ships' landing. He was christened 1610 ?. Fleet Bay, VA named for him. Can be found in the history books.

(Following information copied from type written pages not
substantiated.) Henry Fleet was born in 1600 and died in 1660 or 1661 in
Lancaster Co., VA. He was one of the early explorers. The ships
Warwick and Tiger sailed for Thames in 1621 with supplies, young women
and wives for planters in VA. They fell among Turk ships, the Tiger,
was rescued and landed in Jamestown. The ship was sent to upper
Potomac to trade for corn. On another voage the Tiger with Henry
Fleet and 21 men was attacked and Henry Fleet was talken captive and
held for several years by the Yawaccomoo-o indians. He learned their
lanquage and ways of life while he was held captive. As early as 1629
he owned land in VA as recorded in the land office records. In 1631
the ship Warwick with Henry Fleet and John Dunton sailed for America
and visted New England, James River and Chesapeake Bay. In 1632 he
traded in NH and the Isles of Shoals. While there he was arrested by
John Utey because his papers were not in order. Gov Harvey and John
Utey become interested in indians with furs to sell. Henry Fleet knew
them, so in order to get help from him they let him go free. He
helped establish Colvert Colony in MD and acted as interpreter and
guide. He settled in MD and was a prominent asociate of Colvert. In
1642 the VA assembly gave Henry Fleet the righ to explore for fourteen
years. In 1644 Lord Baltimore gave him the power to Captain General
to visit the Susquehanna indians and make a peace treaty with them.
In 1646 he was appointed to organize an expedition against the indians
and build a fort in the valley of Rappahannock River. In 1652-53 the
VA assembly renewed the "Priviledge of Discovery" by authorizing Henry
Fleet and William Claybourne to discover and trade where no other
Englishman had ever been before. In 1656 he served as Lt Colonel of
the Militia and one of the Majesty Justices. He helped to lay the
foundation of the colony of MD and build up the colonies of VA. He
was the first to fix the name "Fleet" in the records of the two
states. Fleet Bay, VA was given this name because of Henry Fleet.
