2. JAMES WILLIAM2 MCKINNEY (HENRY1) was born 20 Sep 1790 in Campbell County, Tennessee (Source: Information of James William McKinney family came from FTW file download of AOL. Unknown author), and died 27 May 1873 in Houston, Texas, Missouri. He married SARAH GOUGE 1810 in Campbell County, Tennessee. She was born 02 Feb 1792 in North Carolina, and died 20 Mar 1874.  PHOTO OF JAMES WILLIAM MCKINNEY

Notes for JAMES WILLIAM MCKINNEY: James and Sarah are buried in the Ozark Cemetery southeast of Houston, Texas, Missouri. Their families made up part of the "Tennessee Settlement" in Cole County, Missouri, moving to an area on the Moniteau River about 1816. That settlement consisted of several families whose names later became well-known in Texas county, including the McKinney, Gouge, and Chambers families, a few years after James McKinney's father, Henry McKinney died(1836), James, Sarah and twelve of their thirteen children moved to Texas county. In the 1870's and 1880's it was said that the extended family owned almost all the land in the Indian Creek drainage areas, from Houston to the divide between the Current River and Piney River watersheds, located two miles west of Yukon. Family tradition indicates that James hunted extensively, and bore scars from wounds received from a bear. Most of the McKinney s were farmers; some ventured into politics. At least one earning his living as a blacksmith, and several were active in the timber and mining industries.

This would have been just south of the White River/Thomasville crossroads and possibly was the site of Caswell's blacksmith shop.

David was easily the most prolific of James and Sarah's children. Their third born, David, fathered seventeen children by two wives and had two step-children. He was born in 1814 in Campbell county, TN and married Nancy Wade of Cole County, Missouri in 1837. She died in 1862, two years after the birth of their eleventh child. David married Isabelle Aby Winningham the next year, by whom he had six children. David settles on a large farm adjoining that of this father on the west and south, owned and occupied in 1988 by Julius and Janet Fraley. David was active in both church affairs and politics, serving for many years as the church clerk at Ozark Baptist Church and as the clerk for the Texas County Baptist Association for several years in its infancy. He served three terms as judge of the county court, and as public administrator and as justice of the peace. David died in 1900, and he and his wives are buried at Ozark Cemetery.

David McKinney, Houston Herald, June 28,1900 OBIT.

One of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of Texas county, died at his home near Samoa Wednesday, June 20th, at the age of 86 years,

Deceased was born in Campbell county, Tennessee. Moved to Missouri, first locating in Cole County, and later, in 1845, coming to Texas county, having been elected three times as Judge of the County Court and also filled the offices of public Administrator and Justice of the Peace.

He was married twice during his life--- the first time to Miss Nancy Wade in 1836, eleven children resulting from this union. His second marriage was in 1863 to Miss Isabella Winningham, and to this union six children were born.

Mr. McKinney was one of the old pioneer citizens of Texas County and no man stood higher for integrity, honesty and morality than he. He was a member of the Baptist church for a number of years; and was also one of the oldest members of Texas Lodge No. 177 A.F. & A.M., which order conducted the burial services which took place at Ozark Cemetery Thursday afternoon.

Probably no citizen of South Missouri had a greater number of relatives than Mr. McKinney, and we have heard it estimated that his direct descendants--children, grand children and great grand children-- number something over two hundred.

A large concourse of relatives and friends of the deceased followed the remains to their last resting place and great sorrow was manifested as all that was mortal of this good old citizen was placed in the tomb.

David McKinney, an old and honored resident of Texas County, MO., was born in Campbell County, Tenn., August 19, 1814, being a son of James and Sarah (Gouge) McKinney, who were born in Tennessee and died in Missouri in 1872, aged eighty-five years, and 1874 aged eighty years, respectively. They were married in Campbell County, Tenn., and at an early day removed to Cole County, MO., taking up their residence in Texas County about 1845, where the father was engaged in farming. He was a Democrat and his wife was a member of the Baptist Church. At the age of twenty-two years David McKinney began farming for himself, and resided in Cole County for two years after his parents left, then also came to Texas County where he owns a valuable and productive farm. He was engaged in school teaching while in Cole County, and at one time was elected assessor of the county. Since coming to Texas County he has served three terms as county judge, one of these terms being presiding and probate judge, and has also filled the position of public administrator and justice of the peace, being elected to these offices on the Democratic ticket, which party he has always supported. In 1836 he married Nancy Wade, who was born in Cole County, MO., in 1818, and died in Texas County in 1862, being a daughter of William Wade. To them were born the following children: Margaret, Missouri, Monroe, Martha J., James William, Sarah, C. G., Alonzo, Ellen, Mary, Pinkney, and J. D. November 15, 1863, Mr. McKinney married Isabella, a daughter of J. S. Winningham. She was born in Overton County, Tenn. February 24, 1836, and by Mr. McKinney became the mother of the following children: Andrew J., Robert B., Nancy, Chelly, Ida and Jacob L. Newton McKinney is a native of Cole County, Mo., his father, John McKinney, having come here when a boy of thirteen years from his native State of Tennessee. He settled in what is now Moniteau County, removed to Cole County, and there died in 1886 at the age of seventy-eight years. He could well remember when there was but one house near where Jefferson City is now situated, and he and his parents followed the Indian trail twenty miles west and settled on a farm, which they began clearing and which remained in the possession of the family until about twenty years ago. John McKinney married Miss Juda Landrum, who came with her widowed mother from Tennessee, and their union was blessed in the birth of five sons and daughters: Lina, married Henry N. Gough, who died at the age of forty, leaving four children, three of whom survive; James Henry resides on a farm near the old homestead, and is the father of one child, Jasper, a merchant of Aurora Mo., is the father of six children; Lewis A. is a hack driver, and is now at work at the insane asylum at Nevada, Mo., and John William farms near Centre Town, and is the father of four children. Newton McKinney lived with his parents until sixteen years of age, then began, farming for himself, and was married when he was twenty-three years of age to Miss Martha A. Chambers, a daughter of William Chambers, who was a merchant and the owner of 1,400 acres of land in Cole County. Mr. McKinney and his wife became the parents of four children, only two of whom are living, the other two having died in infancy: Mary Elizabeth, his eldest daughter, is the wife of Addison N. Wilhite, the mother of one child, Flavius Cleveland, and is keeping house for her father, her mother having died June 23, 1888; Mordecai N. also resides with his father, but expects to enter college soon. Mr. McKinney owns 114 acres of good land, well improved, and is one of the honest men of the county. He is a Democrat in politics, and in his religious views is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, in which faith his wife died.

Many changes have been made within the last few years. While the town has held numbers of her old business men, new men have taken the places of others, and new houses opened, among them the Sank's House. Here is located an immense planer, which employs over 100 men in the manufacture of lumber. There are also a number of saw-mills in the vicinity, and upon this trade Cabool depends for its support. The town contains about 500 inhabitants, a number of stores, two saloons, one church and a school building, and is quite a flourishing little city.
