In the presence of Antoine Adhemar, royal notary in New France, residing at Ville Marie, and of the witnesses named below, were present in person Pierre D'Ailleboust, Esquire, Sieur D'Argenteuil, Lieutenant retired from the detachment of the Navy, acting for and in the name of Monsieur de Verneuille, treasurer of the Navy, to whom he promises to make known these presents each and every time there is need,  and to pay all expenses, damages, and interests, on the first part; and Robert Reaume, voyager, residing ordinarily at Quebec, on the other part; who have in good faith made the offer and acceptance that follows, namely that the said Reaume makes the commitment and obligation to go up to the lands of the Ottawas on behalf of the said Verneuil, and within the present year with a Native to return to the said city a canoe laden with beaver pelts that the heirs of Zacarie Jolliet own in the said lands of the Ottawas.  All costs and expenses to be defrayed by the said beaver pelts.  The said Reaume shall be responsible for the said beaver pelts until he reaches this city, as well as he is able.  The expenses of this voyage shall be paid to the said Reaume from the said pelts, and, in addition, the sum of two hundred fifty pounds as his wages, salary and expenses in good beaver pelts at the market price upon his return to this said city that shall be taken from those that the said Reaume will help to bring down, and in the event they are lost, he shall not be allowed to demand the said wages of two hundred fifty pounds.  It is agreed that after the pelts that the said deceased Sieur Jolliet has in the said land of the Ottawas,  have been laden in the said canoe, if the canoe is not sufficiently loaded, the said Reaume shall be allowed to complete the lading with whatever pelts he wishes, and the sale of these shall be to his own profit in addition to his said wages.  Since, and promising, and obligeing, and renouncing. done and passed at the said Ville Marie, at the study of the said Notary, the second day of May, one thousand, six hundred, ninety six, after noon, in the presence of Monsieur Juchereau and George Pruneau, witnesses, residing in the said Ville Marie, undersigned, with the said Sieur D'Argenteuil, and the notary; the said Reaume declared himself unable to write or to sign, having been interpellated (questioned) after the reading was done, according to the law.

Pardevant Antoine Adhemar notaire royal en la Nouvelle France residant a Ville Marie et tesmoins en fin nommes furent presents en leurs personnes Pierre D'Ailleboust escuyer Sieur D'Argenteuil, lieutenant reforme dans le detachement de la marine faisant pour et au nom de monsieur de Verneuille, tresorier de la marine auquel il promet fair agreer ses presentes toute fois et quant il sera besoin a payer tous les depens dommagess et interest d'une part et Robert Reaume, voyageur, demeurant ordinairement a Quebec d'autre part, lesquels de bonne foy ont fait less marche et engagement quy ensuit, scavoir que le dit Reaume s'engage et s'oblige de monter aux pais Outaouais pour ledit sieur de Verneuil et de dessendre la presente annee avec un Sauvage en cette dite ville un canot charge dess castors que les hoirs de Zacarie Jolliet ont aux dits pais des Outaouais le tout aux fraix et despens des dits castors et effects desquels castors le dit Reaume aura soin jusques en cette ville du miuex qui luy sera possible. Ce marche fait a la charge qu'il sera fourny audit Reaume sure les dites pelleteries le dit canot des vivres pour luy et pour ledit Sauvage et ce quy leur sera necessaire pour dessendre les dites pelleteries et oultre moyennant la somme de deux cens cinquante livres pour ses gages salaires et soins et en bons castors au prix du bureau a son retour en cette dite ville lesquesl seront pris sur ceux que le dit Reaume aydera a dessendre et en cas de perte d'iceux ne pourra en rien demander des deux cens cinquanted livres des dites gages, est convenu qu'apres queles pelleteries que le dit deffunt sieur Jolliet a au dit pais des Outaouais seront embarques dans le dit canot et en cas que le dit canot ne soit pas assez charge sera permis audit Reaume de le parachever de charger de telles pelleteries qu'il y voudra metter et le port d'icelles seront son proffit paroultre ses dites gages car ainsy et promettant, et obligeant, et renoncant, et fait et passe au dit Ville Marie estude dudit notaire le deuxsieme jour de may nil six cens quatre vingt seize apres midy en presence de Monsieur Juchereau et George Pruneau tesmonis demeurant audit Ville Marie soussignes avec le dit Sieur D'Argenteuil et notaire, ledit Reaume a declare ne scavoir escrire ny signeeer de ce interpelle apres lecture faite suivant l'ordonnance.
