Johann Staag
Progenitor of the Staggs Family in America
Johann Staag was born in Holland and came to America before 1800, where his name was change to John Staggs. John Staggs lived in Virginia and Kentucky, before he moved to Tennessee, where he married Mary Bell. John Staggs and Mary Bell had three sons, Felix G. Staggs, John Bell Staggs, and Thomas S. Staggs.1

Thomas Staggs was born in about 1819 in Williamson County, Tennessee, where he later became a farmer. Thomas Staggs married Mary "Polly" S. Curtis, who was also born in Tennessee. In a letter, dated October 8, 1874, he named Felix Staggs and John Bell Staggs as his brothers.2 Thomas Staggs and "Polly" Curtis had seven children, which included James H. Staggs, aka, Robert H. Benbrooks, who served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.3
