Papers Found In The VA Military Pension File of Frederick Fisher

On file In The Virginia State Library and Archives

In 1780, Frederick Fisher, who was 18 years old at the time, was "severely wounded" in an engagement of the American Revolution known as The Battle of King's Mountain . He served in a company of Virginia Militia and was pensioned by the state of Virginia until 1846 when his pension from the United States was approved. He died that same year. These are the only documents in his federal pension file but is interesting. The following 91 images are copies of the actual documents in Frederick's Virginia State pension file. The file consists of receipts for money received and Frederick's assignments to various people of his power of attorney to act on his behalf to collect his benefits. Many of the documents were written on both sides of the paper and each side that contains writing is reproduced here. That means that several of the images will have little meaning. In those days (the file covers a period from around 1795 to 1846) written documents were folded and sealed to form their own envelops. You will notice some of the pages have been addressed and postmarked. There are four particularly interesting things to look for in this collection are: 1) Frederick's father is identified as "Charles Fisher of Mecklenburg co. NC" on the second image. 2) The early orders for payment from the state of Virginia were signed by then governor, James Monroe, who later became President. 3) The first item that required Frederick's signature was signed with an "X" and someone else wrote his name by his mark. But he personally signed his name to several of the later documents, giving us examples of his own hand. 4) For many years James K. Polk (another future President) acted with Frederick's power of attorney and made collection for him in "Washington City" and Richmond, VA. His signature appears on several of the pages.
