In 1891, a second Oklahoma land run made the unassigned lands of the Sac & Fox, Pottowatomie and other Indian tribes available for claiming by the swiftest homesteaders. John Monroe Hopkins was one of the successful claimants and he, along with his family, took up residence on their new land on Christmas day of 1891. They had 10 years to make the necessary improvements and "prove" their claim. At the end of the 10 year period, with all requirements met, John Hopkins was given clear title to the land.
