Notes for JOHN KYLE:

The census of 1891 shows that, at age 13, John Kyle was already a coal miner.  From the census data, it would appear that working class children stayed in school through age 12 (I would guess about the equivalent of grade 8 in Scotland at the time), then were considered of working age and expected to get a job.  Since their father was a coal miner, James and John followed him into the pit.  Sometime around the turn of the century, John, and his older brother James, became "Check Weighmen" ("check we'man").  At the time, the miners were on the equivalent of piecework - they were paid based on the amount of coal they dug.  The company weighed the coal, but the unions found it necessary to have their own representatives there to check the weights.  The men employed by the union to fill these positions were known as Check Weighmen.  The men in these jobs had to be trusted by the miners.  (See "The Kyles: A Family of the Twentieth Century in Hamilton"  By Jim Kyle with Mary Neilan, October 2000).
