Aunt Ettie was born during the Civil War and died at age 99 in 1963. She married Civil War veteran Spencer Burton.

Aunt Ettie dressed in what must have been the height of fashion back in about 1880. On the back it says:

Yours Sincerely_
Mariette Marshall

From Barbara Brookes Reeder.

Aunt Ettie a bit later. This was found along with the picture of her in the More Recent Marshall Pictures section of this website. From my mother Natalie Mosher Griswold.

Aunt Ettie at a great age, from a photo album of Mom's. On the back it says:

Here is a Spencer Burton letter to his wife, found in an old box of stuff by Esther Lennertz and Harriet Sawdey, and sent to me by Scott Coyle. The images of the letter and its envelope are followed by Scott's transcription, then by his identifications of the people mentioned in it, then by a couple notes.

OFFICE OF
S. S. BURTON,
TREASURER OF ERIE COUNTY.
ERIE, PENN’A., Oct 10th 1907

My dear wife:
I trust that this will not be the last
letter I write to you but that it will be the last
you ever read from me. I do not want to have
a will as the Home will go to you and that
is about all there is. I have one or two request’s
to make. First. I would like to have Lois + Edna
have the four pieces of mahogany furniture that
belonged to their Mother consisting of one tete-a-
tete one rocker - and one parlor chair and one center
table. This belonged to their Mother when I married
her and came from some of her fathers family
and I think it should go to the girls.
Second. I have told you and the girls many times
that I did not want any of you to put on mour-
ning for me. You all know how I dislike it.
Now if you have any regard for my last wishes
dont ware black for me. I trust that nothing will
ever occur to mar the friendship existing between
you three. It is my prayer that you all may be blessed
with good health and live to ripe old age without
pain. I thank you one and all for the kind treatment extended
to me.
