"Old Abe" was the live mascot of the 8th Wisconsin regiment for a three year period during the Civil War. This card was sold to generate revenue to support the "Great Sanitary Fair" in Chicago which opened on 30  May 1865. Sanitary fairs were organized to generate money to support disabled war veterans.

This card was found in an album of CDV sized photographs of my Schumacher and Broadbent ancestors. They lived in Kendall Co, Illinois and Ford Co., Illinois during this time.
