The Ciopei Genealogy

By Jared L. Olar

May 2008-November 2009

NOTE: I am searching for anyone who might be descended from or related to my Olar, Paskar, Toderiuc, and Ciopei ancestors. In December 2008, I had the joy of making contact with the descendants of Teofilact Ciopei of Tereblecea (born 1883), who was related in some way to my Ciopei ancestors. If you are a relative, or think you might be, I encourage you to please contact me by clicking here. See also our Family Search pages with family photographs hosted by Maritza Hreniuc in French, English, and Romanian. Thanks!

In researching my father's genealogy, I have received invaluable assistance not only from my parents and aunts and uncles and cousins, but also from The Bukovina Society of the Americas. Their website is a storehouse of very helpful information, and I have relied on some of the Society's articles to help write my accounts of my father's ancestors.

The Ciopei Surname

The surname "Ciopei" (with alternate forms "Ciopeiu" and "Copei") appears with relative frequency in the old Orthodox Church parish records of Tereblecea, Bucovina, from the 1800s and early 1900s. It seems likely that all of the Ciopeis living in Tereblecea in those days belonged to a single extended family. Among them was the family of my father's maternal grandmother. The meaning of "Ciopei" is uncertain, but it could be that it is related to the Romanian verbs ciopârţi, "to hack, mangle, or chop," and ciopli, "to cut, whittle, or carve," and the noun cioplitor, "a carver." If so, this would be an occupational surname like Olar ("potter") and Pascar ("fisherman"), and would perhaps mean something like "woodcutter" or "carver."

Three generations of Ciopeis

At this time I know little of the genealogy of my Ciopei ancestors, but I believe they were probably cousins of most, if not all, of the other Ciopeis of Tereblecea. Since the nature of their probable kinship is not yet known, I will first present what is known of my own Ciopeis and then present the known genealogy of the other Tereblecea Ciopeis.

First Generation

1. IOAN CIOPEI of Tereblecea, a resident of house no. 6, almost certainly a peasant farmer, born perhaps around 1830. He is named in the 1879 marriage record of my great-grandmother Iftima Ciopei as "Ioan Copei." He is very probably the "Ion Ciopei" of Tereblecea whose wife IUSTINA was, along with my great-grandmother Iftima, one of the godmothers of Maria Rus, who was baptised in Tereblecea on 23 March 1893. We can certainly identify two of his children in the Orthodox parish records of Tereblecea, as well as three other Ciopei women who are likely to have been his daughters. It is possible that Ioan died some time between April 1888 and January 1903 (see discussion below under No. 5, Natalia Ciopei).

         2. IFTIMA CIOPEI, born circa 1857
         3. EMANUIL CIOPEI
         4. ECATERINA CIOPEI
         5. NATALIA CIOPEI, born 20 Aug. 1862
         6. DOMNICA CIOPEI

Second Generation

2. IFTIMA CIOPEI ("Eftinca"), daughter of Ioan Ciopei, born circa 1857 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary; date of death unknown. In the funeral memory book of my grandmother Rose, her parents are listed as "Leo and Eftinca Paskar." In the Orthodox Church parish records of Tereblecea, "Eftinca" is usually called "Iftima," but sometimes appears as "Iftimia" and "Iftinca." The name is derived from the Greek saints names Euthymius and Euthymia. On 8 Feb. 1879, at the age of 22, Iftima married LEON PASCAR ("Leo Paskar"), age 24, a bachelor from house no. 391, son of Constantin and Anna Pascar. Their marriage record gives their names as "Leon fiul lui Constantin Pascar din Tereblecea" and "Iftima fiica lui Ioan Copei din Tereblecea." Father Ilarion Dracinschi was the priest at their wedding, and the witnesses were Georgi and Paraschiva Rus. Georgi Rus later served as godfather to several of Leon and Iftima's children, and it appears that there was friendship between the Rus family and the families of Iftima Ciopei and Leon Pascar. For example, Iftima's daughter Ana as well as Iustina, wife of SIMION CIOPEI of house no. 524 (see No. 6M below), twice served as two of the three godparents of children of Iustin Rus, on 14 Aug. 1895 and again on 2 May 1899. Leon and Iftima had at least seven, perhaps eight, children. My grandmother's funeral book shows the names Helen, Dominica, Anastasia, and John under "Other members of family." Except for Anastasia, these relatives of my grandmother have been identified in the Tereblecea parish records as her sisters and brother (and "Anastasia" could be a garbled memory of her sisters Ana and Teodosia).

         -- ANA PASCAR, born 29 Jan. 1882
-- DOMNICA PASCARIU ("Dominica"), born 3 Jan. 1884
-- EUFROSINA PASCARIU ("Rose"), born 2 Oct. 1887
-- ELEANA PASCARI ("Helen"), born 13 May 1890
         -- TEODOSIA PASCARIU, born 24 Jan. 1893
-- IOAN PASCARI, ("John"), born 16 July 1895
         -- ZENOVIA PASCAR, born 26 Feb. 1898
         ?? ANASTASIA PASKAR

3. EMANUIL CIOPEI, son of Ioan Ciopei, a resident of house no. 6 in Tereblecea. It was probably around 1888 that Emanuil married AGRIPINA TCACI. They had at least five children, daughters named Domnica, Tetiana (or Tatiana), Teodosia, Elena, and Veronica. The baptismal record of Tatiana names her parents as "Emanuil a lui Ion Ciopei" and "Agripina nascuta Tcaci," residents of house no. 6. On 24 Feb. 1905, Emanuil and his wife Agripina witnessed the marriage of ALECSIE CIOPEI, son of GRIGORIE CIOPEI of house no. 668 in Tereblecea (see no. 4M below), one of the sons of Michail Ciopei. A few years later, on 28 Jan. 1918, Emanuil ("Emanuil Ciopeiu") was one of the witnesses of the marriage of Alecsie's younger sister DOMNICA CIOPEIU, also of house no. 668. Emanuil's role in these weddings indicates that our Ciopei ancestors were probably cousins of the Michail Ciopei family, though their actual kinship is still to be determined.

         7. DOMNICA CIOPEI, born 4 Dec. 1889
         8. TATIANA CIOPEI, born 18 July 1892
         9. TEODOSIA CIOPEI, born 27 Aug. 1897
        10. ELENA CIOPEI, born 19 May 1900
        11. VERONICA CIOPEI, born 15 May 1903

4. ECATERINA CIOPEI, a resident of house no. 6 in Tereblecea, probably daughter of Ioan Ciopei. Since Ecaterina was a Ciopei of house no. 6, and was of the same generation as Ioan Ciopei's children Iftima Ciopei and Emanuil Ciopei who were also from house no. 6, it is most likely that Ecaterina was also one of Ioan's children. Ecaterina's husband was GRIGORI GAVRILOAIEI, son of Ioan Gavriloaiei, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Grigori lived with his wife Ecaterina in house no. 6.

        12. IFTEMIE GAVRILOAIEI, born 21 Dec. 1882
        13. MARIA GAVRILOIEI, born 8 Sept. 1884
        14. CONSTANTIN GAVRILOIEI, born 28 May 1886
        15. GEORGIE GAVRILOAIEI, born 15 May 1888
        16. NATALIA GAVRILOAIEI, born 10 July 1889

5. NATALIA CIOPEI, daughter of Ion Ciopei, born 20 Aug. 1862 probably in Tereblecea. Considering the name of her father and that she was the same generation as Iftima Ciopei, Emanuil Ciopei, and Ecaterina Ciopei, Natalia's father Ion Ciopei is perhaps the same as Ioan Ciopei of house no. 6. If so, then Natalia was a younger sister of my great-grandmother Iftima. Natalia married firstly circa 1888 to IGNATIE NEMIGEAN, born circa 1858, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea who resided at house no. 117, son of Vasilie Nemigean. Natalia was a resident of house no. 117 when her daughter and eldest child Elisaveta was born in 1887, and still lived there in 1903 when she remarried as a widow. Ignatie Nemigean died in Tereblecea at the age of 44 on 29 Aug. 1902. The cause of death is listed as "marasmus" (malnutrition?). In the month prior to his death, Ignatie had suffered the grief of the deaths from scarlet fever of his son Vasilie, 13, who died in late July, and his eldest child Saveta, 15, who died just five days before her father. Ignatie's funeral and burial were 31 Aug. 1902 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi. On or after 26 Jan. 1903, Natalia married secondly in Opriseni (a village near Tereblecea) to 45-year-old widower IOAN BOGHIUC, a peasant farmer from house no. 40 in Opriseni, born 2 Feb. 1858, son of George Boghiuc. The marriage record of Natalia and Ioan identifies her as "widow of Ignati Nemigean and daughter of the late Ion Ciopei." If her father Ion is the Ioan Copei of house no. 6, then Iftima Ciopei's father Ioan died between 7 April 1888 and January 1903.

        17. ELISAVETA NEMIGEAN (Saveta), born 28 March 1887
        18. VASILIE NEMIGEAN, born 2 April 1889
        19. ECATERINA NEMIGEAN, born 14 April 1893
        20. DOMNICA NEMIGEAN, born 3 Nov. 1894
        21. EMANUIL NEMIGEAN, born 10 May 1897
        22. ILIE NEMIGEAN, born 28 July 1899

6. DOMNICA CIOPEI, daughter of Ion Ciopei of Tereblecea. Domnica was one of the godmothers at the baptism of her nephew Vasilie Nimigean (No. 13 below) on 7 April 1888 in Tereblecea. Vasilie's baptismal record names her as "Domnicia fiici lui Ion Ciopei." It is possible that Domnica and Vasilie's mother Natalia were sisters of my great-grandmother Iftima Ciopei.

Third Generation

7. DOMNICA CIOPEI, daughter of Emanuil and Agripina Ciopei, born 4 Dec. 1889 at house no. 6 in Tereblecea, District of Siret, Duchy of Bucovina, Austro-Hungarian Empire. Her baptismal record identifies her parents as "Emanuil Ciopei" and "Agripina Tcaci." The midwife at her birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. Domnica was baptised 9 Dec. 1889 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi. The godparents at her baptism were Teodor Tcaci (no doubt related to her mother Agripina Tcaci) and "Mgdalina" (i.e. Magdalina), wife of Ion Nemigean, all peasant farmers of Tereblecea. On 31 Oct. 1910 in Tereblecea, at the age of 20 years 11 months, Domnica, then a resident of house no. 6, married TEODOR ROTARIU, age 25, born 19 Oct. 1885, a bachelor of house no. 638, son of Ioan Rotariu and Minodora Orsovschi of Tereblecea. The wedding was witnessed by Ambrosie Tcaciu and his wife Maria of Tereblecea, presumably related to Domnica's mother. The priest at the wedding was Father Dimitrie Georgescu.

8. TETIANA CIOPEI (Tatiana), daughter of Emanuil and Agripina Ciopei, born 18 July 1892 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria Hungary. Her baptismal record names her parents as "Emanuil a lui Ion Ciopei" and "Agripina nascuta Tcaci," residents of house no. 6. The midwife at Tatiana's birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. Tatiana was baptised 26 July 1892 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi. Her godmothers were Margareta, wife of Ion Nemigean, and Iustina Pascar, wife of Teodor Tcaci, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. On 27 Oct. 1919, at the age of 27 years 3 months, Tatiana, then a maiden, married a bachelor named DIMITRIE NIMIGEAN, born 22 Feb. 1895 in Tereblecea, a peasant farmer of house no. 682, son of Vasilie and Ana (Dubau) Nimigean. Tatiana was then residing at house no. 6. The witnesses at the marriage were Teodor Nimigean and spouse Pelagia, peasant farmers of Tereblecea, and the priest was Father Ioan Tipa.

9. TEODOSIA CIOPEI, daughter of Emanuil and Agripina Ciopei, born 27 Aug. 1897 at house no. 6 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at her birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. 11. VERONICA CIOPEI, daughter of Emanuil and Agripina Ciopei, born 15 May 1903 at house no. 6 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at her birth was Varvara Cigan of Tereblecea. Veronica was baptised 18 May 1903 by Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and her godmother was Margareta, wife of Ion Nimigian, peasant farmer of Tereblecea.

12. IFTEMIE GAVRILOAIEI, son of Grigori and Ecaterina Gavriloaiei, born 21 Dec. 1882 at house no. 6 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at Iftemie's birth was Todosia Olari of Tereblecea. Iftemie was baptised 23 Dec. 1882 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi. His godparents were Maria Tcaci, Constantin Scripcari, and Marina Pascari, peasant farmers of Tereblecea.

13. MARIA GAVRILOIEI, daughter of Grigori and Ecaterina Gavriloaiei, born 8 Sept. 1884 at house no. 6 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at Maria's birth was Todosia Olari of Tereblecea. Maria was baptised 15 Sept. 1884 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi. Her godparents were Constantin Scripcari and Maria Tcaci, peasant farmers of Tereblecea.

14. CONSTANTIN GAVRILOIEI, Grigori and Ecaterina Gavriloaiei, born 28 May 1886 at house no. 6 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The midwife at his birth was Todosia Olariu of Tereblecea. The midwife at Elisaveta's birth was Iustina Bulbuc of Tereblecea. Elisaveta was baptised 1 April 1887 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi. Her godmother was Eudochia, spouse of Ilie Nemigean, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. In her death record, Elisaveta is called "Saveta fiica lui Ignat Nemigean din Tereblecea," a resident of house no. 117. Her cause of death was "scarlatina," scarlet fever. Elisaveta's younger brother had died of scarlet fever about a month earlier. Her funeral and burial was 25 Aug. 1902 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi.

The godmothers at his baptism were Eudochia, spouse of Ilie Nemigean, and DOMNICA CIOPEI (no. 6 above), daughter of Ion Ciopei, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. Domnica was a sister of Vasilie's mother Natalia. In his death record, Vasilie is identified as "Vasile fiul lui Ignat Nemigean din Tereblecea," a resident of house no. 117. The cause of death was "scarlatina," scarlet fever. Vasilie's older sister Elisaveta also contracted scarlet fever and died of it about a month after Vasilie. His funeral and burial was 31 July 1902 by Father Ilarion Dracinschi.

The Michail Ciopei Family of Tereblecea

Having sketched the family tree of my Ciopei ancestors and cousins, I proceed now to the vast extended family of Michail Ciopei, to whom my Ciopeis were related in some way.

First Generation

1M. MICHAIL CIOPEI of Tereblecea, almost certainly a peasant farmer, born perhaps around 1810 or earlier. Michail's name variously appears in the Orthodox Church parish records of Tereblecea as "Michail," "Michai," "Mihai," "Mihaiu," and "Mihail." He was the ancestor of a large family, and it seems very likely that almost all, if not all, of the Ciopeis living in Tereblecea in the 1800s and early 1900s were his descendants or at least his close kin. In particular it appears that my own Ciopei ancestors were related to the Michail Ciopei family. Based on chronological considerations, my great-grandfather IOAN CIOPEI of house no. 6 could have been a son or perhaps a brother of Michail. In tracing the genealogy of Michail Ciopei's family, five sons of Michail have been identified, as well as one possible daughter. However, their birth order has not been determined since most of their dates of birth have not been discovered.

2M. MACSIM CIOPEI, born circa 1830
         3M. CONSTANTIN CIOPEI
         4M. GRIGORIE CIOPEI
         5M. IUSTIN CIOPEI
         6M. SIMION CIOPEI, born 9 Feb. 1847
7M. ANASTASIA CIOPEI (Nastasia), a possible daughter

Second Generation

2M. MACSIM CIOPEI, son of Michail Ciopei of Tereblecea, born circa 1830, died at age 71 on 20 Feb. 1901 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The cause of his death is given as "aprindere de plamaie" (lung inflammation, perhaps pneumonia). Macsim was buried in Tereblecea on 21 Feb. 1901, and his death record includes the remarkable comment that his funeral and burial were conducted by a group of priests ("sau inmormanlat cu sobor preotesc"), including Father Stefan Scleschi, the pastor of Tereblecea's Romanian Orthodox Church. This notation in his death record indicates that Macsim must have had some prominence in his community and his church. Macsim, a peasant farmer who resided at house no. 532 in Tereblecea, also appears in Tereblecea's Orthodox Church parish records as "Machsim" and "Maxim." It was probably around 1860-1864 that he married IULIANA STRUGARIU, with whom he had at least 10 children:

8M. VASA CIOPEI (Vassa), born 19 Aug. 1865
9M. MARIA CIOPEI, born circa 1867
10M. EUGENIA CIOPEI (Efigenia, Ifigenia), born circa 1869
11M. TEODOR CIOPEI (Toader), born 15 May 1873
12M. DIMITRIE CIOPEI, born circa 1875
        13M. CONSTANTIN CIOPEI, born 1 May 1882
        14M. EUFROSINA CIOPEI, born 16 Jan. 1884
        15M. NATALIA CIOPEI, born 26 July 1886
        16M. IOAN CIOPEI, born 17 Sept. 1888
        17M. SIMEON CIOPEI, born 12 April 1891

3M. CONSTANTIN CIOPEI, son of Michail Ciopei of Tereblecea. Constantin, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea, lived at house no. 185. His wife was named CHARITINA STEMCO, who certainly the mother of two of his three sons and probably the mother of all three. On 13 April 1887, EUDOCHIA, wife of Constantin Ciopei, was the godmother of Ierina Cosic, illegitimate daughter of Matrona Cosic. Eudochia's husband Constantin was presumably the same as Constantin Ciopei, son of Michail Ciopei. If so, his wife Charitina must have died in 1886, after or during the birth of their son Alecsie, and Constantin would have remarried in late 1886 or early 1887.

18M. ION CIOPEI, born circa 1879
        19M. SERGIE CIOPEI, born 18 Nov. 1883
        20M. ALECSIE CIOPEI, born 13 March 1886

4M. GRIGORIE CIOPEI, son of Michail Ciopei of Tereblecea. Grigorie, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea, lived at house no. 668. His wife was named ELISAVETA CUPCEC (also called "Saveta"). The following nine children of Grigorie and Elisaveta have been identified in the Tereblecea parish records:

        21M. ALECSIE CIOPEI, born 17 March 1881
        22M. MICHAIL CIOPEI, born 7 April 1883
        23M. GEORGIE CIOPEI, born 19 April 1885
24M. IOAN CIOPEI, born circa 1890
        25M. DOMNICA CIOPEI, born 2 Feb. 1893
        26M. ELEANA CIOPEI, born 9 June 1895
27M. ECATERINA CIOPEI (Catrina), born 27 Sept. 1897
        28M. EUFROSINA CIOPEI, born 14 Nov. 1899
        29M. ZENOVIA CIOPEI, born 27 July 1903

5M. IUSTIN CIOPEI, son of Michail Ciopei of Tereblecea. Iustin, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea, lived at house no. 330. It was probably circa 1887 that he married his wife MARIA DUBAU. Iustin and Maria endured the sorrowful loss of four of their children in infancy or childhood, including two daughters who died very soon after they were born.

        30M. IOAN CIOPEI, born 22 Feb. 1888
        31M. EUSEBIE CIOPEI, born 19 Jan. 1890
        32M. MARIA CIOPEI, born 17 June 1892
        33M. ELISAVETA CIOPEI, born 17 May 1893
        34M. PAUL CIOPEI, born 7 July 1894
        35M. GEORGIE CIOPEI, born 15 June 1897
        36M. EUGENIA CIOPEI, born 21 Nov. 1899
        37M. DIMITRIE CIOPEI, born 23 Oct. 1902

6M. SIMION CIOPEI, son of Michail Ciopei of Tereblecea, born 9 Feb. 1847, probably in Tereblecea, died 18 Oct. 1910 at the age of 62 years 8 months in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. The cause of death was "de oftiga" (consumption or tuberculosis). Simion's funeral and burial in Tereblecea were conducted by Father Dimitrie Georgescu on 20 Oct. 1910. The death record gives his name as "Simeon al lui Mihaiu Ciopeiu din Tereblecea." Like his brothers, Simion was a peasant farmer of Tereblecea. He and his wife IUSTINA EPURE were residents of house no. 524. In 1895 and again in 1899, Iustina joined with my grandmother's older sister ANA PASCAR (see No. 2 above) in acting as godmothers to sons of Iustin Rus. Members of the Rus family had served as godparents to Ana Pascar and her siblings, and Ana's mother was herself a Ciopei. These facts are probably additional evidence of the kinship between my Ciopei ancestors and the Michail Ciopei family.

38M. GRIGORIE CIOPEI, born circa 1879
        39M. GEORGIE CIOPEI, born 21 April 1881
        40M. IOAN CIOPEI, born 21 April 1881
41M. TEOFILACT CIOPEI (Teofil), born 1 Jan. 1883
        42M. MARIA CIOPEI, born 5 June 1885
        43M. DIMITRIE CIOPEI, born 30 Oct. 1886

7M. ANASTASIA CIOPEI, possibly a daughter of Michail Ciopei of Tereblecea. In the Orthodox Church parish records of Tereblecea, Anastasia's name appears variously as "Noestasia," "Nastasia," as well as "Anastasia." Her husband was CASIAN OLOIER, born 29 Feb. 1840, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea who resided at house no. 163, son of Onufrei Oloier. Casian's name is sometimes spelled in these records as "Cassian," while his surname appears as "Oloer," "Oloier," "Oloeri," "Oloieri," and "Oloieriu." He died in Tereblecea on 29 Dec. 1913 at the age of 73 years 10 months. In his death record, his name is given as "Casian al lui Onofreiu Oloieriu din Tereblecea, and the cause of death is listed as "marasmus." Casian's funeral and burial were 31 Dec. 1913 by Father Dimitrie Georgescu. Anastasia's parentage has not yet been determined, but it is very likely that she was a daughter of Michail Ciopei. This is shown not only from chronological considerations, but from the fact that Anastasia was one of the two godmothers at the 1883 baptism of SERGEI CIOPEI, son of Constantin Ciopei (see No. 3M above), while Anastasia's oldest known child, Matrona Oloier, was one of the two godmothers at the 1886 baptism of Sergie's younger brother ALECSIE CIOPEI. It was quite common for aunts and uncles to serve as godparents for their nieces and nephews, or for older cousins to be godparents to younger cousins, so it is probable that Anastasia was a sister of Constantin and thus a daughter of Michail. Anastasia and her husband Casian had three daughters and three sons:

44M. MATRONA OLOER, born circa 1873 or 1876
        45M. IOAN OLOER, born 26 Jan. 1879

Third Generation

8M. VASA CIOPEI (Vassa), daughter of Macsim and Iuliana Ciopei, born 19 Aug. 1865 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. It was probably around 1888 that Vasa married ACACHIE CUPCIC (sometimes called "Agapie"), born circa 1860, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea, son of Foca Cupcic. Vasa and Acachie resided at house no. 519 in Tereblecea and are known to have had eight children. Acachie died in Tereblecea on 5 Feb. 1907 at the age of 47. His death record identifies him as "Achachie alui Foca Cupcic," and lists the cause of death as "de epilepsie," a seizure or stroke. Acachie's death and burial were 7 Feb. 1907 by Father Gheorghe Ciuperca. On 18 May 1914, at the age of 48 years 9 months, Vasa, still living at house no. 519, married as her second husband a widower named SIMEON COIOCARIU, a peasant farmer of house no. 723 in Tereblecea, son of Vasilie and Domnica (Carliciuc) Coiocariu. The marriage record gives her name as "Vassa daughter of Maxim Ciopeiu and his spouse Iuliana Strugar, widow of Acachie Cupcic." The witnesses at the marriage were Spiridon Coiocariu and his wife Eleana, and the priest was Father Ioan Tipa. Vasa was apparently very close to her younger sister Eugenia, not only joining her husband Acachie in witnessing Eugenia's marriage but also serving as godmother to most of Eugenia's children.

When she was 24 years old, on 28 Feb. 1891 in Tereblecea, she married a bachelor named IOSIF EPURE, born circa 1867, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea, son of Nichita Epure. The witnesses at the wedding were Nicolai Nemigean and his wife Domnica, peasant farmers Tereblecea, and the priest was Father Ilarion Dracinschi. After their wedding, Iosif and Maria resided at Iosif's residence. However, the handwriting in the various records pertaining to this family makes it difficult to tell what their house number was. It could be house no. 316, 346, 376, or 396. Their wedding record seems to show Iosif as a resident of house no. 346, but the birth record of their daughter Elena clearly shows house no. 376. Iosif and Maria are known to have had five children:

        58M. NICOLAI EPURE, born 1 Dec. 1895
        59M. DOMNICA EPURE, born 10 Nov. 1897
        60M. GAVRIIL EPURE, born 5 Nov. 1899

10M. EUGENIA CIOPEI (Efigenia, Ifigenia), daughter of Macsim and Iuliana Ciopei, born circa 1869 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Eugenia lived with her parents at house no. 532 until her marriage. When she was 24 years old, on 24 Jan. 1893 in Tereblecea, Eugenia married a bachelor named FOCA ACSENIUC (or Axeniuc), a peasant farmer of house no. 479, son of Teodor Acseniuc. In the marriage record, they are identified as "Foca a lui Theodor Acseniuc" and "Efigenia fiica lui Macsim Ciopei." The priest at the wedding was Father Ilarion Dracinschi, and the witnesses were Agapie Cupcic and his wife Vassa, older sister of Eugenia. Eugenia and Foca had nine children.

        71M. ILIE ACSENIUC, born 28 Feb. 1908

11M. TEODOR CIOPEI (Toader), son of Macsim and Iuliana Ciopei, born 15 May 1873 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Teodor was a resident of house no. 532. On 10 Feb. 1900 in Tereblecea, Teodor, age 26, married a maiden named AGRIPINA NIMIGEAN, age 18, born 27 June 1881 probably in Tereblecea, a peasant farmer of house no. 16, daughter of Mafteiu Nimigean of Tereblecea, son of Andrei Nimigean. The priest at the wedding was Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and the witnesses were Leon and Catrina Socaci of Tereblecea. The marriage record identifies them as "Toader a lui Maxim Ciopei" and "Agripina fiica lui Mafteiu a lui Andrei Nimigean." Teodor and Agripina had but one child, a son born in 1901 who lived only a day. Agripina died on 10 Aug. 1903 at house no. 532, with the cause of death given as "aprinderea plamailor" (lung inflammation, probably pneumonia). She was buried 12 Aug. 1903 in Tereblecea, with Father Vichenti Simiganoschi conducting her funeral and burial. In her death record, she is called "Agripina spouse of Teodor Ciopei" and is said to be 23 years old (actually she was 22).

About six months after his first wife's death, Teodor, still residing at house no. 532, married in Opriseni on or soon after 30 Jan. 1904 to a maiden named IOANA PITUL, age 24, born 6 Sept. 1879, a resident of house no. 132 in Opriseni, daughter of Vasile Pitul. The priest at the wedding was Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, but because the marriage took place in Opriseni rather than Tereblecea, the Tereblecea parish register does not list the witnesses.

        72M. ION CIOPEI, born 9 March 1901

12M. DIMITRIE CIOPEI, son of Macsim and Iuliana Ciopei, born circa 1875 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Dimitrie, a resident of house no. 532, died at age 18 on 28 June 1893, with Father Ilarion Dracinschi conducting his funeral and burial on 29 June 1893. On 9 March 1901, Eufrosina served as godmother at the baptism of her nephew Ion Ciopei, who died the next day. On 22 Jan. 1906 in Tereblecea, Eufrosina, age 22, married a bachelor named GEORGIE BILETCHI, age 22, born 16 April 1884, a resident of house no. 18 in Opriseni, son of the late Stefan Biletchi of Opriseni. The priest at the wedding was Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and the witnesses were Michail son of Georgie Pitul and his spouse Maria, peasant farmers of Opriseni. The baptismal record identifies her parents as "Macsim a lui Michail Ciopei" and "Iuliana nascuta Strugariu." On 2 Oct. 1911 in Tereblecea, Natalia, age 25 years 2 months, married a bachelor named GRIGORIE HUMENIUC, age 28 years 8 months, born 16 Jan. 1883, a peasant farmer of Tereblecea residing at house no. 26, son of the late Vasilie Humeniuc and Zamfira Sandul. Ion's death record says he died of "idropica" (dropsy) at age 22. He was living in house no. 650 at the time of his death, but his father was apparently the Constantin Ciopei, son of Michail Ciopei, who lived successively at house no. 185 and 416.

Matrona was a daughter of Casian Oloieri and Anastasia Ciopei (See No. 7M above), who was probably a sister of Alecsie's father Constantin. On 28 Oct. 1912 in Tereblecea, Alecsie, a bachelor then aged 26 years 7 months and residing at house no. 416, married ANNA SEMIONOVICI, born 9 Dec. 1877, age 34 years 10 months, a widow who lived at house no. 212 in Tereblecea. The priest at their marriage was Father Vichenti Simiganoschi, and the witnesses were EMANUIL CIOPEI (See No. 3 above) and his wife Agripina, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. The fact that Emanuil witnessed Alecsie marriage indicates that they apparently belonged to the same Ciopei family.
