Monroe County, FL Cemetery

KEY WEST CITY CEMETERY, Key West, FL

Walking through the City Cemetery in the heart of Key West you will notice old hand pumps here and there.  Mr. Tom Hambright (Monroe County Library) relayed to us that before the creation of artificial flowers people would go out and plant flower beds on their loved one's graves.  They would use the hand pumps to water these gardens.  In the 1970's hippies began to live in the cemetery and used the pumps for their water source.  The intruders began to destroy the cemetery so the city disabled the pumps.   Many have been dismantled and others have been gaily painted.  One day while we were there photographing headstones, one gentleman after placing flowers on the grave of his relative, pumped the hand pump on departing.  I don't know what that signifies and if someone else does could you please pass it along to us.

Note: We walked through the cemetery and took pictures of every FERNANDEZ, DIAZ/DIAS, PAZO/PASO, and HERNANDEZ that we saw, over a four day period, and ended up with over 600 photos!  Because of the shear numbers of photos we had to split them up into groups of a hundred, as we came across them in the cemetery.
