North Carolina

Sarah Fellow born about 1726 married Walter Kennedy born about 1725 in Johnston Co, North Carolina.  They had two children.  Walter died (Q: 1da 5mo 1751) in Johnston Co, North Carolina.  His will was probated June 1751 in Johnston County, North Carolina. .  Sarah died (Q: 9da 6mo 1769).

They had the following children:

John Kennedy                    born 29 Sept 1747 in Lenoir, North Carolina

Mary Cox Kennedy           born abt 1748        in Lenoir, North Carolina

Le Bateman thinks that Sarah Fellow married his ancestor James Oats after Walter Kenney died.  The Bible records we have from the Kennedy descendants do not mention a remarriage.

We do have the record of Walter Kennedy’s probate where Sarah is Executrix and James Oats is the Deputy Clerk of Court, which shows that they knew each other.  She would have been a young widow with means and a remarriage “out of order” was not unusual.  She would have been dismissed from the Quaker meeting for marrying out of unity and there is no record of her dismissal.  However, the records are not complete.

Her two children with Walter were married within the church showing strong affiliation still with the Quakers.  Sarah was living when her daughter Mary wed, but Mary’s parentage is not noted.

The Kennedy family has Sarah Kennedy buried with Walter Kennedy, but it looks like a memorial added by later descendants. Rootsweb source

In Memory of Walter Kennedy, died 1751.
His wife, Sarah Kennedy.

John Fellow (born 1697) had a brother Robert (born 1694) who also came to North Carolina.  We think he is the father of a Robert Fellow (born 1738).

He might have had a daughter named Sarah of the right age.

Captain James Oates was born 1724  in North Carolina and died in 1766.. He married  Sarah Fellow abt. 1752.

They had the following children

John Oates (1753-    )        born 8 Dec 1753 [Bible of James and Sarah Oates]
Susanna Oates (1756-    )
James Oates (1757-1815)
Samuel Oates (1760-1802)
Richard Wyatt Oates (1762-1851)
Steven Oates (1764-1817)

The above children are from the Oats Family Webpage

“One source that names Sarah Fellow Oates is the Revolutionary War Records of Duplin and Sampson County North Carolina by The late Oscar and Barbara Bizzell.   The Bible was donated to the South Carolinian Library by a descendant of Stephenson and Pharibia Oates [The Bible pages are really faded. At times you cannot read the names]. Stephenson was the youngest son of James and Sarah Oates. James and Sarah married in Dobbs County North Carolina, but I believe the records were destroyed in a fire.” Le Bateman
